Scientists have just found out what you always wanted to know: why do fingernails, when nibbled or torn, tend to tear across the nail rather than downwards towards the nail bed?

By analyzing nails under the electron microscope, the reason became clear: nails are made of three layers containing the protein keratin. The keratin fibres have a specific arrangement that prevents breaks from running down the nail and also gives the nail tremendous strength. Without this arrangement, according to one of the researchers, 'every tear would damage our nail bed, inflicting great pain and incurring infection'. A similar pattern is seen in horses' hooves—which is just as well—because if cracks were to run upwards instead of across in a horse's hoof, it could lead to infection, lameness and death.

How could anyone say that this crucial design feature of hooves and fingernails has come about by accident? The evidence surely shouts 'Designer'.

Nail biting typically begins in childhood and can continue through adulthood, and the side effects can be more than cosmetic. Repeated nail biting can make the skin around your nails feel sore, and it can damage the tissue that makes nails grow, resulting in abnormal-looking nails. To help you stop biting your nails, dermatologists recommend following these tips.

📺 The Cambrian Explosion
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-03-05
When most people hear the word 'explosion', they often think of destroyed buildings and injured people. But geologists have long recognized a different type of 'explosion' in earth's sedimentary rocks, known as the Cambrian explosion.

Cambrian rocks are a group of rocks—found around the world—in which we find fossils of many of the major animal groups. This is significant because Precambrian rocks, found below the Cambrian, don't generally contain much fossil material—but then in the Cambrian—there are fossils in abundance. In fact, this transition is so dramatic that some call it the Cambrian Big Bang.

But probably the most devastating impact of the Cambrian 'explosion' is the damage it does to evolutionary ideas, even with evolutionary dating notions. Since most major animal groups appeared 'suddenly' in the fossil record, without ancestors, the idea that all life evolved slowly over time becomes very hard to swallow.

In the early nineties, researchers from Montana State University made a startling discovery. Inspecting a piece of T. rex bone under a microscope, they could hardly believe their eyes—they could see dinosaur red blood cells!
This discovery prompted lead scientist, Dr Mary Schweitzer, to say:
'It was exactly like looking at a slice of modern bone. But, of course, I couldn't believe it. I said to the lab technician: "The bones, after all, are 65 million years old. How could blood cells survive that long?"'
In a Discover magazine article, Dr Schweitzer explained further her surprise,
'If you take a blood sample and you stick it on a shelf, you have nothing recognizable in about a week. So why would there be anything left in dinosaurs?'
Such a response is understandable, considering that she thinks dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago. But surely such data suggest it wasn't that long ago?

The Roswell Incident - a UFO crash? The Roswell Incident - a UFO crash?
📺 The Roswell Incident - a UFO crash?
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-03-05
In 1947 a crash landing occurred in Roswell, New Mexico, that people still talk about. According to many UFO believers, aliens from another world crash-landed their flying saucer, and the US government has tried to cover it up ever since.

This claim was given impetus with the release of a 1995 documentary that claimed to show genuine footage of autopsies on aliens that were recovered from the crash site. But the credibility of this film experienced its own 'crash landing' when one of the actors paid to take part in the documentary publicly confessed it was a hoax.

So what really did happen at Roswell? Well, 1947 was the beginning of the Cold War and the USA was secretly monitoring the Soviets via weather-type balloons with specialized monitoring equipment. When one crashed on a ranch at Roswell, they wanted to keep things secret so that the Soviets didn't know they were being spied on.

📺 Wollemi Pine -- a living fossil
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-03-05
When scientists announced the discovery of the Wollemi Pine in Australia, in 1994, it caused a sensation. Some reported that it was like finding a living dinosaur, because the tree was only known from fossils in 'Jurassic' rocks. That would make it extinct for 150 million years, by evolutionary reckoning.

Finds like this are actually quite common. When something that scientists thought became extinct millions of years ago is found alive, it's called a 'living fossil'. But 'living fossils' pose a problem for evolution—since the organism hasn't changed, it brings into question the supposed millions of years age as well as the very idea of evolution.
When a tree was planted in London, recently, Sir David Attenborough said:
'It is romantic, I think, that something has survived 200 million years unchanged'.
Perhaps he considers it romantic, but this observation makes the millions of years of evolution very hard to believe.

📺 What you didn't know about your nails?

Wonder about what's living under your fingernails? Here are some things you may not have known:

1. Your nails may be harboring germs that can make you sick. It's found that bacteria that cause vomiting and diarrhea are often found under people's fingernails. The culprits? Changing diapers, poor bathroom hygiene and handling raw meat--all can leave behind unwanted guests under your nails.

2. Artificial nails are ickiest. They may look cleaner, because they mask what's building up underneath, say experts. And, what's lurking under there, well, it's not so pretty. It's believed that more germs are found under artificial nails than under real ones.

3. Potentially "fatal" germs can lurk under hospital workers' nails. Ugh, just when you think hospitals are safe places-- notes that dirty fingernails could be the source of deadly infections passed from doctors and nurses to patients. An important note: Don't be afraid of hospitals, but also, don't be afraid to ask your health care provider to wash her hands when she comes into the room to examine you--especially if you don't see her scrub up right away or do so carelessly.

4. Sorry guys, your nails are germier. Men have more germs camping out under their fingernails than women. Yes ladies, it's OK to ask him to wash his hands now and then--especially before getting romantic!
5. Surprise! Nail biters may actually have cleaner nails. But, the good news stops there, while the act of biting nails may clear out bacteria, nail biters ingest more germs.

Nail Fungus - 4 Causes And Risk Factors Of Nail FungusNail Fungus - 4 Causes And Risk Factors Of Nail Fungus
📺 Nail Fungus - 4 Causes And Risk Factors Of Nail Fungus
Robo Suzie and Health 📤 2 years ago 2015-07-06
http://goo.gl/caJjap - How my husband got rid of nail fungus very fast and easy! Great treatment.

Hi! I'm robo-Suzie and today I'll talk to you about 4 Causes And Risk Factors Of Nail Fungus.
Also don't forget to check out the link below, to find out, how I got rid of nail fungus fast and easy! I was so happy it worked!
But back to our topic.

Do you have discolored and brittle nails? Or are your nails starting to separate from your nail beds? If your answer is yes, then there is a good chance that you have contracted onychomycosis, which is better known as nail fungus.

Causes of Nail Fungus.

Nail fungus results when fungi grow in one's nail beds. The main cause of nail fungus is dermatophytes, which are parasitic fungi that infect our skin. These dermatophytes cause infection to our nails because of their ability to feed off keratin, which is the primary protein that makes up our hair, skin, and nails. Because the keratin is being eaten away at a fast rate, the nails respond by producing the same material at an even faster rate. This process results in thicker nails that eventually get detached from the nail bed. Other effects of nail fungus include discoloration of the nails because of the accumulation of by-products of fungi metabolism, crumbling of the nails, pain in the skin around the affected areas, and a foul odor.

Nail fungus is very difficult to treat, so prevention is a better way of dealing with it. But in order to make sure the fungus would never start to manifest, it is vital to know its causes. The causes of nail fungus include the following:

1. Nail injury. Cracks and breaks in our nails, such as those caused by improper trimming of the nails, may provide the fungus a way of entry to our nail beds. Moreover, it would provide the fungus more area in which to manifest and grow. Another usual cause of nail cracks is when the nail goes through trauma, like when something hits the nail really hard. When this happens, the space between the nail plate and nail bed increases, giving the fungus more room for growth.

2. Warm and moist conditions. These conditions could be found in several places, like public shower areas, locker rooms, and even in the insides of your shoes. Such environments would only provide a good breeding ground for the fungus.

3. Decreased immunity. People who are not eating right or undergoing a lot of stress generally have weaker immune systems. Also, those who have health disorders that affects the immune system, such as HIV and diabetes, are prone to having nail fungus.

4. Inefficient blood circulation. If there is not enough blood flow in an area, the immune system won't be able to do its function properly in that area. Insufficient blood flow would also cause the nails to have poor nutrition, making them more easily traumatized. This may then result to nail fungus infection.

Risk Factors Associated with Nail Fungus.

Several risk factors are known to heighten the possibility of contracting nail fungus. According to studies, the risk of getting nail fungus increases with age because of the difference in skin thickness among the different age groups. As one ages, his/her nails tend to grow at a slower rate and thickens. Also, gender plays a role in catching nail fungus. Men are more prone to this infection than women are. Other risk factors include smoking, perspiring heavily, and family history.

That's it! Thank you.

CMIcreationstation 📤 4 years ago 2014-01-30
Half a century ago, Nobel Prize winning biologist Sir Peter Medawar made a startling comment. He declared that the survival of a child in a mother's womb contradicted immunological laws. Since the immune system normally detects foreign tissue and attacks it you'd expect the immune system to attack the genetically distinct child within her.

Well, we now know that it actually does but the baby survives by putting up a very specific defense. Researchers at the medical college of Georgia discovered that mammalian embryos produce a special enzyme that suppresses the mother's killer T-cell action. The human embryo starts to produce this enzyme just before it attaches to the mother's uterus.

This refutes a major argument used to support abortion that the embryo is just a part of the mother's body to do with as she pleases. The research clearly shows that the human embryo is distinct from its mother, from the beginning.

Most people don't like to be told they have a big head, but some scientists might actually consider that a compliment. Humans have much large skulls than apes and since humans are much more intelligent there's been a long-standing belief that skull size indicates level of intelligence. That's why evolutionists tend to interpret larger ape skulls as advanced apes and smaller human skulls as sub human.

But this evolutionary story has multiple problems. Neandertals were supposedly primitive, often portrayed as sub-human, but their skulls are actually bigger than ours. Also the winner of the 1921 Nobel Prize for literature had a tiny skull, 25% less than today's average volume.

The reality is, skull size is a poor intelligence indicator. After all, the average skull size of men is greater than that of women, but there is no consistence difference in intelligence.

Acrylic Nails VS Gel Nails (GET GEL!)Acrylic Nails VS Gel Nails (GET GEL!)

ammyranth 📤 6 years ago 2011-10-13
Hi everyone, here is a short (full of "ums") video I made for people who wonder what the different between acrylic and gel nails are and what one's to choose.

Regardless of Gel or Acrylic nails definitely make sure you are going to a salon with qualified nail technicians :)

Acrylic Pros;
Strong and sturdy
Look nice when they're first done
Nail polish sticks to them really well

Cons;
They smell horrid
They grow out and look horrible without a refill
Some nail salons use acrylic which is actually illegal (in australia) and is prone to giving you fungus and other infections
Acrylic is damaging to the nail bed and when taken off you will have damaged nails underneath no matter how careful you are due to how they are put on to begin with (buffing, cuticles being cut etc)
They are known to yellow
They are usually at least 2cm thick and look ridiculous!!!!! (the worst con in my opinion)

Gel Pros;
Hardly and scent at all (mild soy sauce perhaps)
SUPER THIN!! can't even notice they're on there
REALLY REALLY SHINY!
Not damaging to the nail, if done properly no buffing of the nail is necessary, the ingredients in the gel is designed to strengthen your nails
My gel nails (bio sculpture) can only be done by technicians who have completed the bio sculpture course, they are the only ones with a license to purchase their products
You can wait longer between refills as the gel is applied thin and is less noticeable

Gel Cons;
Nothing.. yet :)

Stay tuned, please correct any incorrect info and, thanks for watching :)

Thankyou to the salon I went to, Nuleaf at West Lakes Shore in Adelaide South Australia, who in no-way asked/reimbursed me to do this video and will probably ask me to remove it when they see how awful it is :P

📺 Sickle Cell Anemia -- not evidence for evolution
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-03-06
In some parts of Africa, it is actually an advantage to have mutated, oddly-shaped red blood cells.

This condition, known as sickle cell anemia, is usually a disadvantage, but, ironically, it can actually help protect someone from malarial infection because a sickled red blood cell is less appetizing for the malaria parasite.

Many people mistakenly view this sort of change as an example of evolution in action—because a mutation in DNA has made people better adapted to their environment.

But if microbes really did turn into mankind—which is what evolution teaches—this would require the addition of new DNA information to turn the relatively simple genome of a microbe into the vastly more complicated one of a person.

In the case of sickle cell anemia, the opposite has happened, because DNA information has been corrupted and lost, not gained, because the crippled blood cells are less able to transport oxygen.

What do mice and fruit flies have in common? On the surface, you'd not think much, but geneticists have discovered that some of their genes are practically identical. Discoveries like this are often touted as proof of evolution because the similar genes supposedly show that mice and fruit flies are related.

But evolutionary scientists did not predict this. Genetics professor Sean Caroll confessed, "No biologist had even the foggiest notion that such similarities could exist between genes of such different animals."

According to evolutionists, mice and fruit flies last shared a common ancestor over six hundred million years ago, therefore any common genes they possessed should have been scrambled beyond recognition by almost countless generations of mutations.

Different animals share similar genes, not because they are related, but because they had a common designer who used a similar blueprint to build the animal kingdom and that was not very long ago either.

TEDx Talks 📤 6 years ago 2011-10-20
How did we go from animal husbandry, where farmers cared for their animals, to "meat science"? From a relationship with living beings, to treating them like a commodity? Those who abuse animals are likely to abuse other people, and that includes farmworkers.

About Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States:
The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest animal protection organization, with more than 11 million members and constituents. Wayne's work on animal issues has been featured in thousands of newspapers and magazines across the country. Wayne blogs daily at Wayne Pacelle: A Humane Nation and is the author of the 2011 book The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them, published by William Morrow.

This talk is part of Session One: Meet for TEDxFruitvale, which was held on October 14, 2011 at Mills College in Oakland, CA. The conference's theme was Harvesting Change, and it focused on farmworkers, labor and other social justice movements, and fair labor practices in business. http://tedxfruitvale.org/

About TEDx, x = independently organized event:

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.*

The Nail Polish I have used in this video is Ruby and Millie Purple. The base coat is by Boots No 17 and the top coat is Barry M. Always use a base coat to protect your nails from becoming stained, especially when using dark colours:)

Laetoli FootprintsLaetoli Footprints
📺 Laetoli Footprints
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-03-08
In 1978, a team led by Mary Leakey discovered a series of footprints in Tanzania. These are known as the Laetoli footprints. According to many researchers, these footprints are identical to those made by humans. Paleoanthropologist, Donald Johanson stated, 'Make no mistake about it, they are like modern human footprints'.

Why is it, then, that most scientists reject the idea that humans made these footprints? To understand this odd situation, it's important to realize that evolutionists think that the footprints were made in mud 3.6 million years ago. Therefore, according to such evolutionary ideas, humans weren't around then, so the footprints can't be human! But if a human didn't make the footprints, who or what did? A Scientific American article acknowledges that this is still an 'unsolved mystery' . However, I can't help but feel it's a mystery of their own making, caused by their evolutionary thinking, instead of taking the Bible's history seriously.

📺 WHITLOW infection of the tip of the finger
Raine Carosin 📤 4 years ago 2014-01-15
In the latter half of December 2013, I had helped to move stuff in an office and factory, and hadn't used gloves.
I think that is where I may have picked up the "virus" or "infection".
UPDATE 27 Feb 2014 - Been meaning to let you know that the finger is now totally fine... But, Boy, was it sore while it lasted! Didn't do the antibiotic thing as Doc had a look and said it was fine... Only thing left of the whitlow was the fact the skin under my nail had to regrow to it's "perfect" curve again because it had looked like it had separated from the nail somewhat for a while... But fine now... A anti-bacterial oitment and a disinfectant worked 100 per cent, plus of course my "funnel"... Otherwise, thanks for watching!!!

WHAT IS WHITLOW
Whitlow
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (with grateful thanks! Please don't forget to support this great site!)

This article is about infection of the tip of the finger. For infection at
the side or base of the fingernail, see paronychia. For other uses, see
whitlow (disambiguation).
Whitlow
Classification and external resources

An infection of the pulp space
ICD-9 681.01
A whitlow or felon is an infection of the tip of thefinger.[1][2][a]
Herpetic whitlow and melanotic whitlow are subtypes that are not synonymous
with the termfelon. A felon is an "extremely painful abscess on the palmar
aspect of the fingertip".[6] Whitlow usually refers to herpetic whitlow,
though it can also refer to melanotic whitlow,[7] which somewhat resembles
acral lentiginous melanoma. The terms whitlow and felon are also sometimes
misapplied to paronychia, which is an infection of the tissue at the side or
base of the nail.

An infection of the pulp space of the thumbNotes[edit]1.. Jump up^ The term
whitlow derives from the Scandinavianwhickflaw, combining a variant of quick
(a sensitive spot) and flaw.[3][4] Felon comes from the Old French, derived
from the Latin root fel-, literally meaning "bile" and referring to the
toxic content of the abscess.[5]

📺 Why nail biters don't cry

Why nail biters don
