In this CrEvo rant, Ian addresses the evolutionary claim that nylonase (and other, similar bacterial mutations) are an increase in information in the genome.

It was brought to my attention that the link I provided to Anderson's original paper no longer worked. He and Dr. Georgria Purdom have a more recent paper out which covers the same topic and makes the same points:
A Creationist Perspective of Beneficial Mutations in Bacteria
Dr. Georgia Purdom and Dr. Kevin Anderson
https://answersingenesis.org/genetics/mutations/a-creationist
perspective-of-beneficial-mutations-in-bacteria/

Please note that while there are many evolutionary papers which have referred to bacterial mutations as "non-random" (i.e., the genetic changes were made by the bacteria itself), one in particular is: Cairns, J., and P. L. Foster, 1991. Adaptive reversion of a frameshift mutation in Escherichia coli. Genetics 128:695–701.

How to Squash a Paranormal ClaimHow to Squash a Paranormal Claim
How to Squash a Paranormal Claim
Big Think 📤 6 years ago 2012-04-23
The James Randi Educational Foundation has never met a "psychic" it couldn't discredit—easily. Still, Randi understands why such frauds appeal to people.

Question: What does the JREF consider a legitimate test of
paranormal claims?
A test of any specific claim is going to depend entirely upon that
claim.  If you say you can speak to dead people, I've got a whole load
of questions I would like to ask certain dead people.  Answers to which I
already have, and the dead people, since they are dead, I don't believe
they've got the answers any longer, but if you want to call them up and
ask them the questions and come up with the right answer, hey, you
could win the million dollars.  Now, many people say they can read
minds, they can predict the future, they can interpret dreams and such,
well, it all depends on the specific claim they make.  All they have to
do is say what they can do, under what circumstances, with what
accuracy.
And some people have taken, literally, years.  One fellow, a PhD in
California took four and a half years to answer those three questions,
and finally when we got ready to enter into tests with him of "remote
viewing," as he called it, and he actually gave courses in this at the
university in California, he suddenly changed his email address and his
telephone number.  We haven't been able to reach him since. Isn't that
strange?  I guess he doesn't need the million dollars.
Question: What has been the most difficult paranormal claim for the
JREF to disprove?James Randi: I'd like to say that there has been one particularly
difficult one, but no, they've all been so easy.  They've been so easy
because they've been so transparent. I've been in this business for a
long, long time and I've seen everything.  Recently, I got a nice
contract to go to South Korea and do a TV series, which I did there,
testing South Korean "psychics," so-called.  And they told me before I
left, they said, "Oh, Mr. Randi, you signed the contract, so I guess we
should tell, we've got psychics in South Korea that you've never seen
before."  And I went off there with my assistant and we looked at them
and turned to one another and said, "Wait a minute. This is the same
thing that has been going on since the 1600s. It's in all the books.
It's exactly the same thing. They're serving kimchee at lunch instead of
macaroni, or whatever, but in any different culture, in any differen...
the costume is different, the language is different, but the same
stunts are being done again, and again, and again.  They haven't
invented anything new since the early 1600s.

Question: Do you believe supernatural thinking is ingrained in human
cognition?James Randi: Well, you'd have to ask a psychologist, and perhaps a
few psychiatrists that question because technically I can't answer that
question.  But I will tell you, I suspect strongly that people need to
have some more romance in their lives.  After all, look at the average
kid who is male or female who was raised by their parents who believe
that he or she will have children and will have a wife or a husband and
they will be absolutely ideal people and everything will go... you will
be a doctor, or lawyer, or you'll be very wealthy, have a beautiful
home.  It doesn't work out that way all the time.  In fact, it seldom
works out that way.  And so they look around and say, "What have I done
wrong?"  And them somebody runs an ad on television saying, "Oh, I can
solve your problems.  I can give you guidance to the future, and I can
look into the crystal ball, or read the tarot cards," or whatever.  They
may tend to fall for that sort of thing because they say, "They
wouldn't' say that if it weren't true."  Oh, yes, they would.  And
there's a huge profit margin in this.  So people do fall for these
things very, very easily.Recorded April 16, 2010Interviewed by Austin Allen

Ichthus Films - the controversy is finally put to rest. Was Dawkins REALLY stumped when asked the question about evidence for genetic mutations ADDING information to the the genome? He answers it - IN HIS OWN WORDS. Be prepared for a shock!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

From YT user Jjjayco's film - Below is his comment:
Richard Dawkins is dumbfounded after being asked to "give an example of a genetic mutation or an evolutionary process which can be seen to increase the information in the genome" - quite a reasonable question that one would expect Oxford University's Professor for the Public Understanding of Science - so adamant in his belief in evolution - could and would provide an answer for.

He then responds but DOES NOT answer the question that was asked of him. Why? Because he has no idea when it comes to processes that add information to the genome - the very premise of what he proclaims!! His writings claiming that he was not stumped are a desperate endeavour to cover his cowardly tracks (and on a further note, his writings don't cover any of these "information adding" processes either).

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Mr. EVOHEAD - I am "begging" you! Please read Dawkins' answer at this site...it will embarrass you in the final analysis - that is if you haven't drunk too much of the Koolaide yet!

Hurled to the center of the Earth again,
The place where it's hot, love,
You know, it hurts to breathe in,
And the watershed you balance on is begging it,
Well did he ever know,
Will he ever know?

The trees in the moonshine are a dark lattice,
So you catalog in the angle you notice,
In a vacuum you are charged to record this,
So you won't make it easy on me.

I can't go into this no more,
It puts too many thorns on my mind,
And the necessary balloon lies a corpse on the floor,
We've pissed on far too many sprites,
And they're all standing up for their rights.

Born on a desert floor, you've the deepest thirst,
And you came to my sweet shore to indulge it,
With the warm and dreaming eyes of an orphan,
But there is not enough,
There is not enough.

Out of a gunnysack fall red rabbits,
Into the crucible to be rendered an emulsion,
And we can't allow a chance they'd restore themselves,
So we can't make it easy on you.

Undaunted, you bathed in hollow cries,
The boys with swollen, sunburnt eyes,
A reward for letting nothing under their skin,
So help me, I don't know, I might,
Just give the old dark side a try.

Don't cast your whirling eyes on the shore
'til we even the score.
I still owe you for the hole in the floor,
And the ghost in the hall,
Who decides who paddles over the falls?
Yeah, who makes the call,
Who makes the call?

I know there's an eventual
Release from every scale of crime,
But the necessary balloon lies a corpse on the floor,
We've pissed on far too many good intentions held by clever sprites,
And they're all standing up for their rights.

Evolution is like a Box of Chocolates (More Golden Crocoduck nominees)
Potholer54debunks 📤 8 years ago 2010-05-12
Four videos from the 2010 Golden Crocoduck nominees playlist are highlighted, all linked by a common theme. Here are a few corrections and clarifications:

1) The cracked actor in the first clip is Hal Holbrook. His performance makes him eligible for the Golden Crocoduck 2010. The video is titled "Evolution Theory - Is it Reliable?"

2) The guy in te boat can be found in the video: "CrEvo-Rant-78 - the boat that dont float"

3) In my original script I had the numbers pulled out of Holbrook's box destroyed if they were wrong, as would happen with deleterious genetic traits. But what I said on the video was that they go back into the pool, which would alter the stats. In the first case, the number one would be pulled very quickly, if it took just one second to pick up and discard each of the numbers -- max time 20 seconds. If the wrong numbers went back into the box then there would be a 1 in 20 chance of picking up the right ball each time, so it would take an average of about 10 seconds to pick the right number. But that's just a statistical average. In theory you could keep picking numbers out of the box for a million years and never get a one, just as you could roll a die for ever and never get a 6. The probability is so small as to be impossible.

4) The same goes for the slot machines. Instead os saying it would take a minute to hit the jackpot, in reality it would take a few minutes longer, on average, because not every machine would be guaranteed to get a bacterium symbol even after six tries. There will always be one machine where a bacterium doggedly refuses to come up in one wheel.

These are interesting academic points, and I am happy to clarify my mistakes for the record. But we are still reducing a time period of 77 million (or billion) years to a matter of a few minutes, and changing something the creationists say is impossible to something that is certain. That's the power of natural selection over natural chance.

Dr. John Sanford: Genetic Entropy and the Mystery of the Genome
Jason Chan 📤 6 years ago 2012-07-27
Mutation and natural selection lead to a loss of information over time in the human genome. Why the real nature of DNA and mutation points to a young human race and refutes Neo-Darwinian macro-evolutionary theory.

Dr. John Sanford, a retired Cornell Professor who co-invented the "gene gun" technique of genetically engineering plants, shows in "Genetic Entropy and the Mystery of the Genome" that the "Primary Axiom" is false. The Primary Axiom is the foundational evolutionary premise -- that life is merely the result of mutations and natural selection. In addition to showing compelling theoretical evidence that whole genomes must in fact degenerate over time, this book strongly refutes the Darwinian concept that man is just the result of a random and pointless natural process. This is an updated version of the October 2005 edition, which includes both a new appendix and glossary. http://www.amazon.com/Genetic-Entropy-The-Mystery-Genome/dp/0981631606

[Lyrics]
No, Poison me to say farewell
And lingers through the sleepless nights
A trail of days that end in tears

But I can never be there
The rush of hours,
That never seem to end
My life to tell? You can not comprehend

I am the absentee

I know you're out there searching tonight,
I'm right here
Another day and I cannot see through your eyes,
I'm right here

How could I have known
Whats receding in your thoughts
Wish that I could listen to what always beats inside
For reaching diffidence,
Reaching out

But I can never be there,
How can you think,
That I will understand
When your words just go around what your heart truly wants

I am the absentee

I know you're out there searching tonight,
I'm right here
Another day and I cannot see through your eyes,
I'm right here

I want to tell you,
You're the exploding light,
How everything is visible,
Moments before the dark

I am never, never there

I know you're out there searching tonight,
Another day and I'm not there

Thrust with nails comfort, anxiety and pain
Through spells or anger, confusion and defeat
I wish you'd see me here in front of you,
But I am not here

I know your out there searching tonight, I'm right here
Another day and I cannot see though your eyes

I know your out there,
But I'm right here
Another day and I cannot see though your eyes,
Lead me right

The Mystery of Planets Formation - Unlocking the Secrets of the Solar System
Space & The Universe HD 📤 20 hours ago 2019-02-21
When we look at the Solar System, what clues show us how it formed? We can see pieces of its formation in asteroids, comets and other small bodies that cluster on the fringes of our neighborhood (and sometimes, fly closer to Earth.)

Are the orbits and sizes of the planets a natural byproduct of the formation, or are there features that happened because of rare events? Scientists are focused on answering these questions to better understand how the Earth formed, and what this means for Earth-like planets around other stars.

For example, a new set of simulations showed that Mars is a rare planet. It can happen, but only in certain situations — at least, if the parameters of the simulations are correct. Are these assumptions correct, or do other initial conditions need to be explored?

Finding the answers to these questions not only helps us understand where Mars comes from, but also our own planet. This is interesting to astrobiologists because the Red Planet has extensive evidence of past water.

Results from the Opportunity, Spirit and Curiosity rovers on the Martian surface came across features that form in the presence of water, such as mineralized iron oxide known as hematite, or”blueberries,” because of its shape.

What would happen if Born Again Christian Stephen Baldwin got into a debate with Atheist Richard Dawkins.

Well Stephen Baldwin recently posed an interesting point against Evolution on Celebrity Big Brother UK 2010. So what would Richard Dawkins say in defence of Evolution? Lets find out.

This film is the first of a two part series on the evolution of new genetic information. Here we focus on Point Mutations - the simplest natural mechanisms known to increase the genetic information of a population.

Our second film of the series will focus on duplication events - natural mutations that increase the total amount of genetic information of an individual.

This film was produced under the guidance of molecular biologist Dr. Nicholas Casewell. http://www.lstmed.ac.uk/about/people/dr-nicholas-casewell

Point mutations are small, natural edits in the DNA code of an individual. These edits can be passed from parent to child. Because they are mere edits, point mutations usually do not increase the total amount of information in an individual. As new information is gained, old information is lost. Point mutations do, however, increase the total amount of information within a population.

In this film you will see several examples of beneficial point mutations which have enhanced a creatures abilities or even given rise to entirely new abilities. The first two examples were directly observed in bacteria by scientists in the lab. The third is a case found in domestic dogs, the last example was discovered in several species of wild animal.

Details about mutation examples in this film, along with links to the journals cited can be found at

N.B I won't be continuing this series due to reasons involving "I can't be arsed" but may at some stage revamp this video as I think I can do better. As for now i'm stopping comments because this video attracts morons like a light bulb attracts particularly irritating moths.

A look on the long term study of e coli evolution in the lab. Dr Richard Lenski and his team have spent 20 years (working with around 45,000 generations of e coli) scrupulously experimenting and documenting their findings on how competition for limited resources results in natural selection of beneficial mutations within the population.

- I say here that with mutation A in place, mutation B is more likely to occur and give the citrate digestion ability. This is wrong, badly phrased. What I meant to say was that once mutation A was in place then the cell only further requires mutation B to gain the trait. Apologies for any confusion.

In this rant, Ian shows how evolution simply not scientific because it is not falsifiable. Rather the evolution myth (by definition) simply conforms to whatever evidence it is presented with.

In this week's episode, we dive into some of the incredible DESIGN in DNA and contrast it with the claim of one scientist who claims it was a "stupid design." A new DNA bundling protein is found, scientists use DNA for digital storage to mail each other an MP3, and we talk about ERV's with Dr. Jean Lightner.

Nylonase is not new information: CrEvo Rant #80 with Wazooloo
http://wazooloo.com
http://ianjuby.org
