McMaster Alumni"Systems biology, synthetic biology and the origin of life" Dr. David Deamer - UC Santa Cruz, Biomolecular Engineering
Synthetic life, defined as life that did not arise from preexisting life, spontaneously emerged when the first cell-like structures assembled from mixtures of organic molecules on the early Earth. These structures, referred to as protocells, exhibited certain properties of living systems and represented evolutionary steps toward the first forms of cellular life. Driven by the forces of natural selection, those first cells evolved into the biosphere we inhabit today. In my talk I will describe how we can learn about the origin of life by fabricating protocells in the laboratory.

In the last quarter century, giantism has emerged as the latest consequence of developments that began roughly one thousand years ago.
The illustrated lecture will pose questions to bridge the thousand years. How do merchants (shippers) arrive at connections with carriers (shipowners or masters)? Where have contacts and negotiations taken place? How is risk managed in a risky enterprise? Is the purpose of a voyage to send or retrieve? How is the resulting imbalance in a voyage managed? How important is time spent in port and how is it controlled? How is European prominence to be explained? How does East Asia fit into the current picture?
