When you consider the 206 bones in your body, a humble toe bone does not seem that significant. But in July 2001, Time Magazine ran a cover story where a single toe bone was the star attraction.

The article featured a recent fossil discovery from Ethiopia, which allegedly showed how mankind's ape-like ancestors first stood up on two legs.

Readers were told 'Meet your newfound ancestor, a chimp-like forest creature that stood up and walked 5.8 million years ago'.

Remarkably, however, they based their claim that this creature walked upright, and was supposedly our ancestor, on the shape of a single toe bone. What's more, they found the toe bone over 16 km from the rest of the fossil material used in the reconstruction.

The article was titled 'One Giant Step for Mankind'. But maybe it should've been 'One Giant Leap in Speculation'.

Ardipithecus Ramidus

October 1st, 2009
WASHINGTON - Anthropologists took the wraps off the oldest known human ancestor Thursday - a 4.4-million-year-old Ethiopian skeleton named Ardi, which challenges many long-held assumptions about how humans and apes evolved.

Its not a chimp. Its not a human. It shows us what we used to be, said paleoanthropologist Tim White of the University of California-Berkeley, co-director of the research group that discovered and analysed more than 110 specimens of the 4.4-million-year-old species Ardipithecus ramidus.

White was speaking at a Washington press conference a day before a series of 47 articles on the find are published in the American journal Science.

Ardi is the most complete skeleton among the specimens and is more than a million years older than the famous Lucy skeleton uncovered in the 1970s. She was found in 1992 in Ethiopias harsh Afar desert at a site called Aramis, just 74 km from where Lucys species, Australopithecus afarensis, was found in 1974.

An initial paper was published in 1994, but the fossils were so fragile it took a further 15 years to reconstruct Ardis skeleton and analyse it.

The findings provide scientists with information on what a common ancestor for humans and apes may have been like, with a mix of traits from earlier species and later species.

But Ardi and her species were less like modern apes than scientists expected - indicating that apes likely evolved extensively after scientists say the apes and humans diverged. This challenges the long-standing scientific belief that apes give a good look at what an early ancestor of humans may have looked like.

Small-brained, 120 cm tall and weighing about 50 kg, Ardipithecus ramidus lived in a wooded environment, climbing on all fours in the trees and walking on two feet on the ground, not walking on their knuckles like gorillas or swinging from the trees like chimps.

So when you go from head to toe, youre seeing a mosaic creature, that is neither chimpanzee, nor is it human. It is Ardipithecus, White said.

Darwin said we have to be really careful. The only way were really going to know what this last common ancestor looked like is to go and find it.

Well, at 4.4 million years ago we found something pretty close to it. And, just like Darwin appreciated, evolution of the ape lineages and the human lineage has been going on independently since the time those lines split, since that last common ancestor we shared, White said.

Belgian Blue Cows -- evidence of 'de-volution'
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-10-28
If Arnold Schwarzenegger had a pet cow, I can almost guarantee it would be a Belgian Blue. These cows are incredibly muscled and have very little fat. Many people think of this breed as evolution in action—because a mutation in its DNA has brought about a supposed improvement.

But if microbes really did turn into Belgian Blue cows—which is what evolution teaches—this would require the addition of lots of new DNA information to turn the relatively simple genome of a bacteria into the vastly more complicated genome of a cow.

However, in the case of Belgian Blue cows, we see the opposite, because no new information has been added. In fact, a mutation has corrupted the myostatin gene, which normally stops muscles growing too big—so information has been lost. The cows have lost control over muscle growth. So Belgian Blue cows have devolved, not evolved!

Dropstones don’t disprove Noah’s FloodDropstones don’t disprove Noah’s Flood
Dropstones don’t disprove Noah’s Flood
CMIcreationstation 📤 3 years ago 2015-10-26
Dropstones are rocks that have been carried and dropped into finely grained sediment. For instance, icebergs can carry and drop rocks on the ocean floor, to be covered by further sedimentation.
Noah’s flood was a worldwide catastrophe that deposited much of earth’s fossil-bearing rocks. However, within these rocks, we find what appear to be dropstones. This is often interpreted as evidence of previous ice ages. And since you can’t have ice ages occurring during the flood, this has prompted some to claim that dropstones disprove Noah’s flood.
However, dropstones can be formed by mechanisms that don’t involve icebergs. For example, floating tree stumps can have rocks entangled within them, which are then dropped on the ocean floor. Moreover, recent research in the journal “Marine Geology” has shown that a large seaweed known as kelp has a surprising ability to carry and drop sizeable rocks. So dropstones don’t disprove Noah’s flood. To find out more from Creation Ministries International visit our website creation.com

Human feet are very different from those of other primates. Ardi's foot had a big toe that could grasp as she climbed in the trees.

Following publication in the journal Science on the discovery and study of a 4.4 million-year-old female partial skeleton nicknamed "Ardi," Discovery Channel will present a world premiere special, DISCOVERING ARDI, Sunday October 11 at 9 PM (ET/PT) documenting the sustained, intensive investigation leading up to this landmark publication of the Ardipithecus ramidus fossils.

UNDERSTANDING ARDI, a one-hour special produced in collaboration with CBS News will air at 11 PM (ET/PT) immediately following DISCOVERING ARDI. The special is moderated by former CBS and CNN anchor Paula Zahn and includes research team members Dr. Tim White, Dr. Yohannes Haile-Selassie, Dr. Giday WoldeGabriel, Dr. Owen Lovejoy, and science journalist Ann Gibbons

The scientific investigation began in the Ethiopian desert 17 years ago, and now opens a new chapter on human evolution, revealing the first evolutionary steps our ancestors took after we diverged from a common ancestor we once shared with living chimpanzees. "Ardi's" centerpiece skeleton, the other hominids she lived with, and the rocks, soils, plants and animals that made up her world were analyzed in laboratories around the world, and the scientists have now published their findings in the prestigious journal Science.

"Ardi" is now the oldest skeleton from our (hominid) branch of the primate family tree. These Ethiopian discoveries reveal an early grade of human evolution in Africa that predated the famous Australopithecus nicknamed "Lucy." Ardipithecus was a woodland creature with a small brain, long arms, and short legs. The pelvis and feet show a primitive form of two-legged walking on the ground, but Ardipithecus was also a capable tree climber, with long fingers and big toes that allowed their feet to grasp like an ape's. The discoveries answer old questions about how hominids became bipedal.

An exoplanet (extrasolar planet) is a planet located outside the Solar System. The first evidence of an exoplanet was noted as early as 1917, but was not recognized as such. However, the first scientific detection of an exoplanet began in 1988. Shortly afterwards, the first confirmed detection came in 1992, with the discovery of several terrestrial-mass planets orbiting the pulsar PSR B1257+12. The first confirmation of an exoplanet orbiting a main-sequence star was made in 1995, when a giant planet was found in a four-day orbit around the nearby star 51 Pegasi. Some exoplanets have been imaged directly by telescopes, but the vast majority have been detected through indirect methods, such as the transit method and the radial-velocity method. As of 1 February 2019, there are 3,976 confirmed planets in 2,971 systems, with 653 systems having more than one planet. This is a list of the most notable discoveries.

How the Universe Works - Planets in Our Solar System and black hole - Space Discovery Documentary
How the Universe Works 📤 1 week ago 2019-02-10
A supermassive black hole (SMBH) is the largest type of black hole, on the order of hundreds of thousands to billions of solar masses (M?), and is found in the center of almost all massive galaxies. In the case of the Milky Way, the SMBH corresponds with the location of Sagittarius A*.

Supermassive black holes have properties that distinguish them from lower-mass classifications. First, the average density of a supermassive black hole (defined as the mass of the black hole divided by the volume within its Schwarzschild radius) can be less than the density of water in the case of some supermassive black holes. This is because the Schwarzschild radius is directly proportional to mass, while density is inversely proportional to the volume. Since the volume of a spherical object (such as the event horizon of a non-rotating black hole) is directly proportional to the cube of the radius, the minimum density of a black hole is inversely proportional to the square of the mass, and thus higher mass black holes have lower average density. In addition, the tidal forces in the vicinity of the event horizon are significantly weaker for massive black holes. As with density, the tidal force on a body at the event horizon is inversely proportional to the square of the mass: a person on the surface of the Earth and one at the event horizon of a 10 million M? black hole experience about the same tidal force between their head and feet. Unlike with stellar mass black holes, one would not experience significant tidal force until very deep into the black hole.

Stasis -- Another problem for evolution from the fossil record
CMIcreationstation 📤 6 years ago 2012-11-05
In nature documentaries and science text books, one often hears about creatures that arrived at their body plan very early in evolutionary history and have not made any real changes since that time, supposedly millions of years ago. These are called 'living fossils'—like the coelacanth and the Wollemi pine. This phenomenon is known as stasis, things staying pretty much the same. And it turns out that pretty much every animal in the entire fossil record appears suddenly and shows this same history of stasis. This was not predicted by evolution!

A more recent and radical theory called "Punctuated Equilibrium" recognises stasis in the fossil record, but requires belief in rapid massive leaps in evolution—an unsubstantiated 'just-so' story.

However, the physical evidence—sudden appearance and stasis in the fossil record—fits remarkably well with the biblical account of a recent creation followed by a devastating global flood, just as the bible describes in Genesis.

Information and the origin of life - Did cells write their own software?
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2014-01-30
What is something computers and humans have in common which constantly needs upgrading in computers but not in humans? The answer is software. You might not have realized that you have software but inside the nucleus of each of your cells a program is written in the form of three billion DNA letters.

Intelligent programmers write computer software but what about living things? Evolutionists tell us that the information in the first living cell just appeared by itself, with no intelligent input required. But is that possible? The answer is a resounding no.

Even one of Australia's best known scientists, Paul Davies, conceded that, "There is no know law of physics able to crate information from nothing." And perhaps that's why, in a New Scientist article, he lamented, "How did stupid atoms spontaneously write their own software? Nobody knows."

Scientists have discovered that about one in thirteen people have flexible ape-like feet after observing about 400 visitors to the Boston Museum of Science who walked barefoot on a mechanised carpet that analyzed several components of their feet. Compared with most of our very rigid feet holding the bones in the foot together, when primates lift their heels off the ground, they have a floppy foot with nothing holding their bones together. This is known as a midtarsal break and is similar to what the Boston team identified in some of the study's participants.

Every time I hear of Neandertal man, I cannot help but feel sorry for the poor guy. Initially reconstructed to look like some apish brute, it took 44 years before a reanalysis of the fossils revealed that Neandertal man's anatomy was very similar to yours and mine.

Neandertals buried their dead—which isn't the sort of behaviour you'd expect from an animal. What's more, discoveries of ornaments, tools and stone-tipped spears reveal a high level of sophistication. Neandertals made their own superglue from pitch and flute-like structures found with their remains suggest they enjoyed music.

But what did Neandertal man really look like? In recent years researchers have answered this question by using computerised reconstructions, commonly used in forensic science. These studies show that Neandertal Man looked remarkably similar to you and me. If he was dressed in a suit and walked past you in the street, you probably would not notice him.

Mitochondrial Eve -- a good fit for the real Eve
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-03-07
Many people scoff at the idea that all humans descended from a woman called Eve only thousands of years ago. But geneticists actually endorse a similar idea, known as mitochondrial Eve.

By studying the DNA in cell parts known as mitochondria, scientists propose that all humans descended from a single woman that lived 200,000 years ago.

But this date relies on evolutionary assumptions, chief of which is the idea chimpanzees and humans shared a common ancestor 6 million years ago.

However, actual research has shown that mitochondrial DNA mutates much faster than this evolutionary estimate, and this drastically reduces mitochondrial Eve's age. This would mean that mitochondrial Eve—as a review in the prestigious journal Science said: 'lived about 6500 years ago—a figure clearly incompatible with current theories on human origins.'

But it is compatible with the Bible's history.

This claim was given impetus with the release of a 1995 documentary that claimed to show genuine footage of autopsies on aliens that were recovered from the crash site. But the credibility of this film experienced its own 'crash landing' when one of the actors paid to take part in the documentary publicly confessed it was a hoax.

So what really did happen at Roswell? Well, 1947 was the beginning of the Cold War and the USA was secretly monitoring the Soviets via weather-type balloons with specialized monitoring equipment. When one crashed on a ranch at Roswell, they wanted to keep things secret so that the Soviets didn't know they were being spied on.

Renowned Kent State University Anthropology Professor C. Owen Lovejoy and three other local researchers (all Kent State alumni), who contributed to the project that was named the 2009 Science "Breakthrough of the Year," discuss the implications of the discovery of Ardipithecus ramidus, or Ardi, who at 4.4 million years is the oldest know fossilized hominid skeleton.

The two-hour special premieres this Sunday, October 11th @ 9pm E/P on Discovery.

Clues from Ardi's pelvis indicate she walked upright on two legs, not on all four like chimpanzees.

Fossil toe bone makes news - Ardipithecus Raminus kaddaba
