Monkey Madness -- could monkeys ever type out Shakespeare?
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-05-30
It has long been claimed that monkeys typing randomly could eventually type out the complete works of Shakespeare. Plymouth University researchers recently installed a computer in a monkey enclosure to see what would happen.

After a month the 6 monkeys in question had produced 5 pages of indecipherable text. This result isn't surprising, though, because the monkeys mainly used the computer as a toilet and trampoline.

This ridiculous 'research' reminds me of the mathematician Sir Fred Hoyle's analogy to illustrate the likelihood a single bio-polymer, necessary for life, arising by chance; without a Creator. He likened it to 100,000 billion, billion, billion, billion, billion blind people each solving a Rubix cube puzzle simultaneously. And this is just one bio-polymer. The simplest life forms have hundreds of bio-polymers.

Despite these odds, however, many people insist life arose by chance because they don't like the idea of a Creator.

The famous "Monkeys With Typewriters" theorem has been cited for years as an example of how given enough time, chance events could produce the first living cell. Professor Gerald Schroeder does the math. Information was taken from Antony Flew's 2007 book, There Is A God. This video will help those who liked the God's Not Dead movie.

The mechanisms of evolution explained in one video.

The theory of evolution explains how the enormous variety of life could come into existence. How it is possible for primitive life forms to spawn the millions of different creatures, that exist today. Unfortunately, evolution is often misunderstood, because it's mechanisms seem counter intuitive. By using visualizations, infographics and appealing characters, the viewer is more likely to understand it the complex information. More than that, by presenting the information in an entertaining way, the information is more likely to sink in.

Short videos, explaining things. For example Evolution, the Universe, Stock Market or controversial topics like Fracking. Because we love science.

We would love to interact more with you, our viewers to figure out what topics you want to see. If you have a suggestion for future videos or feedback, drop us a line! :)

How the Universe Works - Strange New Planet Found - Space Discovery Documentary

In early 2016, astronomers at Caltech announced evidence for another large planet in the outer solar system. They – and most professional astronomers – call this distant, unknown world Planet 9 (although some call it Planet X, in deference to those still smarting over the IAU’s 2006 decision to demote Pluto to dwarf planet status). The evidence for Planet 9 has always been indirect. It came from the strangely aligned orbits of small objects in the outer solar system. Since 2016, astronomers have searched for a Planet 9 (or Planet X) in the outer solar system, but, so far, they haven’t found one. Now another group of astronomers says the strange orbits of outer solar system bodies can be explained without a Planet 9.

In other words, maybe there’s no reason to suppose a Planet 9 exists.

What’s going on here? Nothing more than the process of science. Science is, after all, primarily a process and a search for truth.

Belgian Blue Cows -- evidence of 'de-volution'
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-10-28
If Arnold Schwarzenegger had a pet cow, I can almost guarantee it would be a Belgian Blue. These cows are incredibly muscled and have very little fat. Many people think of this breed as evolution in action—because a mutation in its DNA has brought about a supposed improvement.

But if microbes really did turn into Belgian Blue cows—which is what evolution teaches—this would require the addition of lots of new DNA information to turn the relatively simple genome of a bacteria into the vastly more complicated genome of a cow.

However, in the case of Belgian Blue cows, we see the opposite, because no new information has been added. In fact, a mutation has corrupted the myostatin gene, which normally stops muscles growing too big—so information has been lost. The cows have lost control over muscle growth. So Belgian Blue cows have devolved, not evolved!

Read Before Commenting:

I responded to many of the objections to this video here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvVkxKSHbtU

I made this video for mathematicians, so I did not explain the calculations, because someone with a strong background in Mathematics would figure it out pretty quickly.

(1/20)^1000 comes from assuming that we already have the 20 amino acids that are found in proteins and that they somehow can link themselves together. Each amino acid in the chain has a (1/20) chance of being right, so a 1000 amino acid chain would have a (1/20)^1000 chance of having the right sequence.

Even if we had 15 billion years (the supposed age of the universe) and we had 10^80 new "lottery tickets" (the number of individual atoms in the universe) every second, then we still do not come close to having enough "lottery tickets". The odds of winning the "Cosmic Lottery" for 1 protein is (1/20)^1000. Even if we double the supposed age of the universe to 30 billion we still do not come close.

Even if we had an obnoxiously small protein of 100 amino acids, it still does not cover the odds of winning the cosmic lottery.

Keep in mind that we would need hundreds of proteins just to have the simplest living cell, as I explain painfully in detail in the video.

Someone commented that there have been experiments that have shown that the building blocks of life could have formed naturally. This is nice, but it does not address the mathematics that I am putting forth here, because video already assumes that those building blocks are there. The argument in this video has to do with the order of the sequence of the building blocks. We can have a bunch of scrabble letters, but that does not mean that they can form a poem on their own if we drop them on the ground. Neither is there any reason to believe that amino acids (or nucleotides, or ribonucleotides for that matter) would ever form themselves into the right sequence to form a protein (or a code for just one protein) to make life possible. Also, like I mentioned in the video, hundreds of proteins would be needed just to form the simplest life forms, and I explain why.

Koko "types" while Ron films

This is a rare glimpse of Dr. Ron Cohn, Gorilla Foundation co-founder and video-documentarian, filming Koko — as filmed by Dr. Penny Patterson. Koko seems to enjoy "typing" on Penny's computer laptop in a way that "sounds" like real typing, but is not. Does this mean that Koko is interested in actually learning how to type? Probably not, as Koko has never been formally taught to spell (though she can spell when motivated to do so) and her 1000-word sign language vocabulary doesn't require it. Note that some great apes have been taught to use a "language board" which enables them to "type" by pressing keys with symbols representing entire words. Much higher level and less labor intensive than human text messaging; it makes you wonder who's more evolved.

Lesson: It's not necessary to teach great apes to do "everything" that humans do.

Darwin's theory of biological evolution helps us understand how simple life forms can give rise to complex lifeforms, but how did the first reproducing creatures come about? The origin of life needs its own explanation.

Scientists don't currently have a complete explanation for life's origins, but different labs around the globe are looking into the idea that life may have emerged from chemistry. In this animation you will learn why they are studying this idea, and you'll get to see a few of the fascinating things they have discovered.

CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-03-08
If you have ever tried to knuckle-walk on all fours like a gorilla, you'd soon realize that it's difficult to do. But some apes do this with ease, partly because they have specialized wrist joints, which we don't have.

Australopithecus afarensis, also known as 'Lucy', is an ape-like creature that some claim is our ancestor. Evolutionary books show pictures of Lucy walking upright, so you would not expect her to have knuckle-walking wrist joints. But recently, scientists were shocked to discover this wrist joint structure in Lucy's kind. According to one of the researchers: 'I walked over to the cabinet, pulled out Lucy, and—shazam!—she had the morphology that was classic for knuckle walkers.'

If 'Lucy' really is our ancestor who walked upright, why does her wrist anatomy suggest she walked on all fours? It just does not add up!

Neanderthal Man looks like you and meNeanderthal Man looks like you and me
Neanderthal Man looks like you and me
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-03-07
Every time I hear of Neandertal man, I cannot help but feel sorry for the poor guy. Initially reconstructed to look like some apish brute, it took 44 years before a reanalysis of the fossils revealed that Neandertal man's anatomy was very similar to yours and mine.

Neandertals buried their dead—which isn't the sort of behaviour you'd expect from an animal. What's more, discoveries of ornaments, tools and stone-tipped spears reveal a high level of sophistication. Neandertals made their own superglue from pitch and flute-like structures found with their remains suggest they enjoyed music.

But what did Neandertal man really look like? In recent years researchers have answered this question by using computerised reconstructions, commonly used in forensic science. These studies show that Neandertal Man looked remarkably similar to you and me. If he was dressed in a suit and walked past you in the street, you probably would not notice him.

Monkey Madness -- could monkeys ever type out Shakespeare?
