Gum Elemi Boats Dallas Knowles 2019-01-15 | Joss and Emit finally got a chance to try out their newest Christmas presents: a pair of authentic Gum Elemi boats made by boat builder Lloyd Sands of Andros. Named after the native tree they were mostly made out of, these cool little racing boats are still referred to as "Gum Elemi Boats" even though they could be made out of a variety of woods. Young kids throughout the islands would have grown up in the past playing with these home made little fully usable sailboats. These days they are all but non existent, but thanks to Mr. Sands Joss and Emit can still experience a little "old school" playtime. I think they enjoyed it too!

Termite Taking the Final Junior Race in Long Island Dallas Knowles 2016-06-16 | The C class boat "Termite" from Great Exuma features junior sailors learning to sail. The Exuma Sailing Club competed for the first time in the 49th annual Long Island Regatta in Salt Pond, Long Island Bahamas in June 2016. After a 5th and 6th place finish in the first two races the junior sailors came storming back with a dominant final race in which they never trailed. The first place finish in the last race secured a second overall finish for Termite in the Junior Championships (junior skipper and crew, adult coach onboard). We are expecting great things from these up and coming sailors!

farmers cay Regatta 2016 Ocean Race Dallas Knowles 2016-02-19 | The C Class boat "Termite" takes on 12 other C class boats during the 2016 FFFFF. First Friday in February Farmers Cay Festival. Termite is a 17 years old racing sloop sailed exclusively by junior sailors.
Heavy Wind Sailing Aboard Tari Anne Dallas Knowles 2016-01-25 | "Heavy Wind" is a relative term. On this day it was about 30mph, and for these Native Bahamian Sloops, that is beyond the limits of what they race in. We recently completed a repair on Tari Annes mast and were ready to test it out under the most extreme conditions. Now we know that she can handle winds at this level we can rest easy during our normal sailing days. Yes, we do not all wear life jackets while sailing these boats. That is because moving around onboard during tacks etc can be difficult enough without something getting snagged or caught somewhere and a life jacket making you more cumbersome than usual. We watch out for each other and each others safety at all times. this day was supposed to be a match race between Tari Anne and the smaller C class sloop Termite (which you can see at 1:11) but the winds proved to be too heavy and we had to cancel. Barracudas are always a little curious and usually get closer than most people would like but this one was taking it to a whole new level. He swims right up to everyone who snorkels there and doesn't dash away when you jump in the water. He gave off a peaceful and gentle vibe so we decided to see just how comfortable he was with people. Bahamian Sloop sailing is a truly unique event featuring locally made wooden sailboats used only for racing. The boats featured here are "C Class" boats. There are over 50 C class boats in The Bahamas making it the largest class that races at the regattas throughout the country. Light Wind Sailing OnTari Anne Dallas Knowles 2015-06-15 | Whipped the ole GoPro out during our time at the Long Island Regatta this year. It was too chaotic during the faster races so the footage is from the really slow race. Tari Anne is a beautiful Bahamian Sloop that competes in the "B Class" at the National Family Island Regatta in April and the Long Island Regatta in June every year. She is a 6 time champion, but all under the captaining on Marcus Mitchell. She is under our care now and we have raced her twice so far. Although she is 41 years old she is still beautiful and very, very fast. We look forward to many years of great competition aboard this gorgeous lady! Exploring Deans Hole Dallas Knowles 2015-06-13 | During the Long Island Regatta we decided to take an afternoon off to drive down to Clarence Town and see the famous Deans Blue Hole. We've always wanted to see it in person and now we finally have. It was amazing! You can walk from the sandy beach into the water and directly over the dropoff of the hole. There were memorials all around from people that have lost their lives while swimming here, a reminder of how ruthless nature can be sometimes.The cliffs that surround the hole are the prefect height for jumping and we all took turns leaping into the deep water. Even the 6 year old Hagen jumped a few times! If you are ever in long Island you HAVE to take a visit here!

These are some of the ways we like to pack ours so we can take all the gear we need, and some we just want to have, on our multi-day kayaking and camping trips.
