Games I will be playing for the marathon: Super Mario Galaxy 2 Mega Man 9 Katamari DamacyHoneyhop Galaxy sans bee suitArrowspace2010-06-09 | This isn't perfectly optimized, but is simply a demonstration of how the first part of the level can be done without the bee suit. The double wall kick up to the first swing can be done with a triple jump, but is much more difficult to pull off. You can also kick directly onto the swing, which is faster than landing on the platform like I did. The timing for jumping from the second swing is extremely tight, but it's also possible to land it without getting hit by the enemy. All in all, extremely difficult route, but probably slightly faster than doing it with the bee suit.
It might be possible to continue to the next part of the stage without the bee suit, but my reflexes aren't quick enough to jump off the clouds before they disappear. I do know that it's possible to just fly down from the clouds with the bee suit rather than using the flower, but I don't think it saves any time.

I came up with all of the other (minor) tricks. The boss can probably be done a little faster by hitting more of the segments in midair, but I found this to be the fastest *reliable* method. Time could also possibly be saved by not skipping the cut scenes right away at the beginning, so the thwomp can be manipulated into a better starting position, depending on whether the timer starts during those cut scenes or not. I used Luigi, but all of these tricks can be performed with Mario as well.Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Flip-Out Galaxy speed tricksArrowspace2010-05-31 | A couple time-savers for a 100% speed run of Flip-Out Galaxy. The second trick doesn't save much time, if any, but the first one saves at least 15 seconds.Mega Man 9 - Splash Woman speed trickArrowspace2008-10-01 | Faster method of doing the bubble shaft without Rush Jet or T. Blow (for a full game run, not a time attack). You can ride a small bubble into the final screen as well, but I haven't managed to jump out or to another bubble that way, so I think you have to ride the large bubble up like I did.Mega Man 9 - Galaxy Man Time Attack DemonstrationArrowspace2008-09-28 | Nowhere near perfect, just a demonstration of all the major speed tricks for Galaxy Man's stage. I screw up pretty badly on the first room with ball enemies and then have the slowest possible boss fight, but this was the only recorded attempt where I managed to nail the C. Shot trick at the end of the stage, so I decided to keep it.Super Mario Galaxy - SDA Challenge 12Arrowspace2008-01-09 | Rules of the challenge are to win the race without swimming. It's actually a challenge I submitted. Not too hard (as you can see, since I make a couple minor mistakes, but still win), but something you may not have known was possible.Super Mario Galaxy - SDA Challenge 6Arrowspace2008-01-07 | My proof of completion of SMG Challenge #6 in Mikauro's topic on SDA. The challenge was to complete this level without using any springs or the bee suit. Not a perfect run, by any means, but this wasn't intended to be a speed run or anything.Through the Meteor Storm - Thwomp SkipArrowspace2008-01-04 | Most of the credit for this trick goes to NK3233 from the SDA forums. He mentioned that he'd been able to skip the Thomp section of Through the Meteor Storm, but was unable to reproduce it on video. I had tried skipping it many times when I made my speed run to no avail, but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and try it some more.
Lo and behold, it is possible, but much harder than it appears in this video. You have to jump from very close to where I do. Too close to the edge and you'll get sucked down. Too far back and you won't make it close enough to wall jump. You should be able to get just enough height with your spin to get close enough to the launch star to activate it.Bullet Bill fails at lifeArrowspace2007-12-07 | Sometimes I feel like they aren't even trying.Buoy Base Galaxy - The Secret of Buoy Base speed runArrowspace2007-12-07 | Another obvious one to add to the "must use in a 61 star route" list. Getting hit by the electric thingy wasn't intentional, but hey, it worked =P Lost a second jumping for the star, but I can't see much more time than that being saved here.Gold Leaf Galaxy - Cataquack to the Skies speed runArrowspace2007-12-07 | Not much to say about this, except that I didn't practice this level nearly as much as the others I recorded, so it's a little rough at parts. Decided to put Ouranos's trick into a full level run, and here's the result. Pretty much flawless, except for some hijinx on my tree short cut while scaling the tower (4 seconds lost).
Have I mentioned how much I hate having to do that blind wall kick?Toy Time Galaxy - Heavy Metal Mecha-Bowser speed runArrowspace2007-12-07 | I let the opening cut scene play, which is kind of important, because if you skip it, the trains will be in different positions than they would be in a real run (since you can't skip the cut scenes first time through). Everything went well until the end. I had a few mistakes here and there, but only costing a second each, or so. And then I had a terrible, terrible Mecha-Bowser.
The first big mistake was that I didn't get to the arm fast enough, so I had to wait for its entire cycle before I could make my jump (10 seconds lost). Then I get to the head, and hilarity ensues. I really have no comment, except that it cost me another 8 seconds. I still decided to keep the run, since everything else went so well, and it still serves as a good concept video. But 20 seconds could easily be shaved off of this.Melty Molten Galaxy - The Sinking Lava Spire speed runArrowspace2007-12-07 | Pretty smooth run. I'm not entirely convinced that taking the back route around the volcano is fastest... in fact, I'm fairly certain that it isn't. But it sure looks cool :) I use a new short cut here to scale up the side of the volcano to the launch star, which definitely saves some time.
My star piece route probably isn't perfect, and I actually changed it up and did the 4th and 5th pieces in reversed order because I had a brain fart (which is also why I got hit by the geyser there).
The spire climb is the fastest route on video, as far as I know :)Melty Molten Galaxy - Through the Meteor Storm Speed RunArrowspace2007-12-07 | First, apologies for the obnoxious noise in the background. It's my heater... I made sure to turn it off during all my other videos. This level took the most tries out of all the ones I did runs for, by far. The main factor that caused me to screw up so often was, ironically enough, my own trick on the Bullet Bill planet. The one positive side to running this level so many times is that I pretty much have every other part down to a science, and I can point out exactly how many seconds could have been saved in each area.
First area (torches) - The object here is to get over to the flame guy as fast as possible. It can be done slightly faster if you jump between the two lava pillars closest to the volcano, but it's a risky move. However, even if you take damage, it usually ends up being slightly faster than if you play it safe like I did. This time was about average for me, but at least 3 seconds could be shaved off.
Second area (Thwomps) - There's not a lot you can do to mess up in this area... definitely the easiest part of the level. Long jumping (other than the one at the end) doesn't save any time here since you still have to wait for Thwomps/Meteors.
Third area (star pieces) - Fairly certain that my route is optimal. My aim/timing was off in a couple areas, but it isn't really noticable unless you've played the level as many times as I have. Ideally, I wouldn't have had to wait for the geysers after the fourth piece, so that's one sign that I was a little slow here. Could probably be about three seconds faster.
Fourth area (Bullet Bills) - The bane of my existence. I was so proud of the little trick I found here that you can imagine how dismayed I was to find out that it's next to impossible to perform during a real run. I finally settled on this one, since the rest of the level went so well. Getting hit costs me about 6 seconds, but it's still a lot faster than going around the long way would have been.
Final area (ball) - This went about perfect... I couldn't be happier with the results.Melty Molten Galaxy - Through the Meteor Storm shortcutArrowspace2007-11-24 | A neat little trick to save a few seconds. In case you're wondering, it doesn't seem to be possible to make the bullet bill fire unless you're actually on its side of the planet. You can jump around all you want on the star's side, but even though you're basically right in front of the cannon, it won't shoot until you switch gravity.Gold Leaf Galaxy - When it Rains, it Pours revisitedArrowspace2007-11-24 | Surprise, surprise. It turns out the route used in my mock speed run wasn't the fastest path possible. Ouranos21 posted a speed trick for the Cosmic Mario race (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwubWAPvHVE), and it works just fine on WiRiP. Pulling it off is a little more difficult because of the camera being uncooperative, but it's definitely quicker than my previous method. I also show a new method for scaling the tower...
