(also called slide pins or guide pins). Most greases will work in the short term for slider pin lubrication but, over time, petroleum based greases can swell up or destroy any rubber components. If the rubber dust boots break down, dirt and debris can contaminate the grease and cause the pin to seize up. Some caliper slider pins have rubber sleeves which can swell up and cause the pin to seize in the bore. Other greases are safe with rubber components but do not have a high enough temperature rating. Because the brakes can generate a lot of heat, you need a grease that will remain fluid in extreme heat but will not dry up. In this video I only mention a few of the greases that are available and I know there will be disagreements about which ones are suitable for slider pins. I'm not claiming to be an authority on the subject, but there are certain brake greases available that are specifically designed for use with caliper slider pins, and the general consensus I find is that high temperature silicone-based greases are more suited to the job than petroleum-based ones. The PCV or Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve is a one-way valve attached to the crankcase of the engine. When an internal combustion engine is running, the majority of the waste gases are vented out through the exhaust system. However, some waste gases can be forced past the pistons and into the crankcase. The PCV valve allows these gases to be vented from the crankcase and back through the intake system to be re-burned. Over time, the PCV valve can get clogged up with sludge and soot and stop working properly, which can allow the gases to accumulate in the crankcase. These gases cause a build-up of pressure in the crankcase which could cause a number of problems, such as blown gaskets or damaged seals, leading to oil leaks. The PCV system reduces harmful vehicle emissions so it is an essential part of the system. PCV valves are a relatively cheap part to replace but it might be worth cleaning them first before renewing them.

In this video I grease the slider pins with different amounts of grease on the pins to see how each amount affects the operation of the pins. The caliper bracket I used for this demonstration used two identical pins with concave tips and three flat strips ground onto the shaft of each pin. This was only a basic bench test with one particular type of brake caliper pin and bracket and does not necessarily replicate what the brake caliper will do when operating under load in actual braking conditions. There are many different caliper pin designs and some of them also have rubber bushings installed on the shafts, so the results could be very different to the pins used in the video. I would recommend always using the correct amount of suitable, rubber-friendly caliper grease and avoid getting any grease on the tips of the slider pins or, if you do, wipe it off before reinstalling the pin.
This job can be carried out with the bracket still bolted to the vehicle, but I used a new caliper on the bench for clearer demonstration. NOTE: If you are lubricating pins that have been in use on your vehicle, you will need to clean out the old grease from the bores and clean the slider pins before applying new grease and re-installing them.
It is important to lubricate your brake caliper slide pins as failure to do so may cause them to stick or even completely seize up which could cause uneven wear of your brake pads. The car may appear to drive normally, but the pads will only be pushed onto the disc from the piston side. This will give reduced braking ability on one wheel, and wear out the pad on the piston side much faster. You might not notice any change in how the engine runs or you may notice that the engine idles rough, has poor performance or even increased fuel consumption. If so, then a dirty or clogged EGR valve is one of the possible causes of these issues. If the valve is clogged up with carbon deposits then cleaning it may fix the problem. This repair process is similar in many other VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat cars from certain years. Check with your car’s manufacturer to be sure. The cam inside the barrel is the part that usually breaks. I carried out the repair with the cylinder in my hands but it would probably be easier clamped in a vice, if you have access to one.
