It was the discipline of my breath, willpower, and our primal skills as a group that got me to the top. As Wim taught us, the cold is merciless yet righteous. We were encouraged not to video or take pics on the way up, as we would immediately lose focus and get cold. I tried it and that's what happened so I only have footage of this journey down with my buddy Diana. Barefoot Sue is launching her Rewilding Series of online workshops and she's excited to share this with you. The first course is aptly called: Barefoot NO-Boot Camp!
Humans are designed with the ability to adapt. Whether it’s adapting to a changing environment physically or mentally, it’s our greatest survival skill. For adaptation to work efficiently we must use it or lose it. Rewilding ecologically is the idea that by stepping back and letting nature find its own way to restore, it's very effective and we have seen incredible results in ecosystems that now require passive management. Why not apply the same theory to our life and benefit by the beautiful, functionally brilliant design of our brain and body?
By rewilding to our body, we can experience natural healing benefits and more passively manage it to free up more time for creativity, community, and a better life. Combining an approach to life that includes barefooting, forest bathing, cold habituation, meditation, walking, and time in nature, we can simplify an important part of our wellness focus, improve alignment, strengthen our nervous system, boost our immune system, reduce inflammation, and so much more. If you don't know where to start, I've developed the first step: Barefoot NO-Boot Camp to get you started. 50% Off until December 31, 2022. Enroll here: www.barefootsue.com

On this day I am particularly calm. There is no wind on the lake and it’s very still. When we expose our body two freezing cold water, it impacts the part of the brain that manages survival and in turn helps our brain to manage huge stressors like dealing with an ongoing pandemic. The best part of our brain is that it can learn to adapt and rewire itself but sometimes we have to give it a little help. I learned how to do a proper ice Immersion through the Wim Hof Method. Be sure to follow safety guidelines and get the proper training before you do this.Ice Plunge in Lake Couchiching with Barefoot Sue.Barefoot Sue2020-12-20 | It’s become almost a daily practice while in isolation. The cells in our arms and legs vasodilate and all the warm blood is sent to our core body to protect the main organs, as we can't live without them. Our prefrontal cortex shuts down when the body is under threat and several his allows me to sit in the water, in the absolute present moment and in command of the sympathetic nervous system. Only in the last couple of years, since learning the Wim Hof method, have I been wearing shorts and a sleeveless top out in the snow. By exposing our bare skin to changes in temperature we give our body and our brain the opportunity to experience the sensations and then learn how to adapt to changes in our environment. If you’re frustrated with being cold all the time the best way to overcome this is to expose yourself to the cold. I was frustrated that the store bought ice or my own ice made with regular ice cube trays only make small cubes. Hence they melt really fast from our body heat, especially when it’s hot out.
My student Jane came up with a great idea. One day she arrived for a plunge with a bag of giant cubes made from muffin tins. Because they were bigger cubes they lasted a lot longer and look really cool in the plunge bath.
Another student Deb had just finished her first WHM Fundamentals course with me and when we talked about making ‘cool cubes’ she suggested I get the silicone muffin molds as it would be easier to get the ice out. excellent idea.
I immediately bought three Silicone trays and discovered that the volume of liquid needed to fill the muffin cup is actually more than needed for any of my metal muffin tins.
Keep being cool. This is my third day of free diving lessons. Learning static and dynamic apnea with ONE breath creates a perfect environment to become completely present while swimming in the marine world. At first I was tense and afraid of not being able to breath and that affected my technique. As you'll see in this video, my Raid Freediving Instructor, Sabrina Meyers, taught me step by step with a great deal of patience, to let go, move slowly and be relaxed. My duck dive improved over time and I was abel to descend straight down to the bottom of Casa Cenote. My friend Nancy does a brilliant job commentating the “axing” of the ice hole, while I swing the ax. ⛏❄️💦🔥 After I made the hole big enough we each took a turn getting in for a couple of minutes. Nancy is one of the Wim Hof Method students and she loves the freezing cold water, as I do. The cold is our warm friend. She will reflect back to you something about yourself you never imagined. We need to be out of the warmth to trigger the adaptation response and practice being in a controlled stressful environment to become happy, strong and healthy. https://www.wimhofmethod.com/instructors/suekenneyIce Water Immersion - Wim Hof MethodBarefoot Sue2019-01-04 | Before I plunge into the ice cold water, I honour the Great Mother Earth with gratitude for all her wisdom, healing and love. For without her I could not live. After I've committed to receiving the guidance she provides in this freezing cold water, without any sense of fear or resistance, I step into her watery space under the ice of a frozen lake in Ontario, Canada with ease. Once immersed there is no thought, no worries, no movement, no fear, only absolute awareness. I am at peace. I am an ice-maiden.
I’m now a certified level one Wim Hof Method Instructor and I believe in the power of nature to guide to be healthy, happy and strong. Command your breath and you command your mind and your body. I'm offering WHM Fundamentals Workshops and you are to learn the science behind this method as well as practical applications. https://www.wimhofmethod.com/instructors/suekenneyThe Ice is CallingBarefoot Sue2018-12-16 | Is it possible that the Great Mother Earth is calling to us from the ice? Inviting us to her world, even in the freezing cold, to offer her wisdom and healing. YES! Of course, she is using every method possible to encourage us to experience and feel her cold, not as a threat but as a way to access our own inner fire.
For years now I've been barefooting in the snow but now as a Wim Hof Method Instructor, I'm outside in my shorts and a tank top, walking barefoot, doing ice baths and cold plunges. When I'm at my cottage I like to go down to the lake and meditate on the pre-Cambrian granite rock. This morning after doing my breathwork, stretching and then a cold shower, I still wanted to be outdoors in the cold. I can't get enough of her! I went down to the ice and heard her calling. At first it was a rumble and then there was loud crackling sounds that were seemingly reverberating from the pressure of my weight on the ice. As I recorded this experience it occurred to me that she is giving me a message to share with you. Step into the cold, allow yourself to be uncomfortable and soon you will be at peace. If you want to learn more about the numerous health benefits of the Wim Hof Method, check out my workshops. https://www.wimhofmethod.com/activities/whm-fundamentals-workshop-toronto-sue-regan-kenneyWim Hof Method North Atlantic Plunge in NewfoundlandBarefoot Sue2018-12-06 | Cold water is your teacher. Certified Wim Hof Method Instructor Sue Kenney is with Steve Lewis at Topsail Beach, Newfoundland, on a cold water plunge in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s -4C and the ocean is between 2-4C. Exposing the body to extreme cold is a form of stress on the body and if you expose yourself to the cold in a controlled environment and be at peace, you can apply this to any part of our life.

Each year I walk the Camino in the Spring and again in the Fall and I try to do most of it barefoot. Walking on rock is much easier for me than it looks. Any natural surface is manageable. Large gravel, pavement and concrete are the hardest surfaces. I love being connected to Mother Earth, especially on the Camino as I feel as though I'm connected to all the pilgrims who walked before me. Especially those who walked barefoot.CAMINO Peregrina Refused Access to CathedralBarefoot Sue2018-10-21 | After walking the Camino to Santiago barefoot, I was refused access into the Cathedral because I didn’t have any shoes on!
When I asked them why they said that it was because it was the rules. I said that pilgrims of the past would’ve walked in and their bare feet, and they have lots of statues and paintings of saints and holy people in their bare feet how could they refuse me. But the security guard wouldn’t change his mind.
Thankfully there was a woman there begging for money because she has cancer and can’t work. Her name was Vanessa and she offered me her shoes. Even though they didn’t fit we push the heel down and I stuck my foot inside the shoe to make it look like I was wearing shoes. I had promised my friend Ingrid that I would ‘hug the apostle’ for her to commemorate her anniversary walking into Santiago a year ago. Thank you Vanessa for not judging me because I was in my bare feet. And thank you for lending me your shoes and not being afraid of the health issues of sharing them.Walking the Camino BarefootpilgrimBarefoot Sue2018-10-17 | ...Barefoot on the CaminoBarefoot Sue2018-10-09 | It’s been 8 years of Barefooting and to connect to the Great Mother Earth directly, is a blessing. I challenge anyone who has snow right now to go outside but your bare feet Annette, face plant, make a snowball, sit in it and see how long it takes you to actually feel cold.
It’s April 14 and nobody expected that we would have about 15 cm of snow fall overnight and today on Lake Couchiching. The temperature outside is -8 Celsius. So instead of complaining about it embrace it and go out and have some fun. Today I Went out and played in the snow. I sat down in it I put my bare feet under it and flipped it up like a child. I did a face plant in the snow and try to make a snowball but it didn’t work. And then I lay down on my back and looked up at the sky as I made a snow angel. Embrace with a great mother gives us. Be grateful for the snow that we have as it is water and we need to drink water to survive. Embrace the cold. It will wake your mind up it will open your eyes it will make you respond. All the sensory receptors in your body will be on alert. And when you come in door as you feel more alive and more connected with the entire world.
