The bloodiest battle in U.S. military history unfolded during 47 days in 1918. More than 26,000 were killed and nearly 100,000 were wounded in an almost forgotten chapter of World War 1 that included Private Gustave Amm of the Illinois 33rd "Golden Cross" Division.
100 years later, his grandson Roger Amm embarks on a global journey of discovery to learn about the grandfather he barely knew, and those who served on both sides of the conflict.
Kanestar Productions presents the award-winning, landmark, five-part documentary series "A Golden Cross to Bear: A Story of the 33rd Division in World War 1" produced in partnership with WTVP-TV, the PBS station serving Central Illinois, and the United States World War 1 Centennial Commission.
ABOUT THIS EPISODE:
S1 E1 - A New Kind of War Retired Ottawa, Illinois music educator Roger Amm begins a journey of discovery to learn about the military service of his grandfather - Pontiac, Illinois farmer Gustave Amm - who fought with the 131st Infantry Regiment of the 33rd "Golden Cross" Division during World War I. What he learns begins a larger mission to honor all who serve, on both sides of the conflict.
S1 E2 - Roadmaps Retired Ottawa, Illinois music educator Roger Amm's quest to understand what his grandfather Gustave Amm endured during combat in World War I takes on new meaning after observing a chemical weapons training session with those currently serving in uniform with the U.S. Army's 33rd Brigade Combat Team in Bloomington, Illinois.
S1 E3 - The Fogs of War The remnants of trench warfare on the former battlefields of World War I in France yield clues for Roger Amm about what his grandfather Gustave Amm witnessed during the bloodiest battle in U.S. military history, and leads to an emotional moment at one of the most hauntingly beautiful locations dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
S1 E4 - In Foreign Fields Historian and battlefield guide Randy Gaulke retraces the path of the 131st Infantry Regiment for Roger Amm, and takes him on Gustave Amm's perilous march from the banks of the Meuse River in eastern France to the heights of the Bois Plat Chêne, among the many locations in France during the bloodiest battle in U.S. military history in October and November of 1918.
S1 E5 - Home Fronts During his quest to learn more about the World War I combat experience of his grandfather, Gustave Amm, an American soldier of the 131st Infantry Regiment, Roger Amm also visits the Bavarian town of his ancestors, and makes a surprising discovery before returning to the United States to honor the sacrifice and service of all who served in the "war to end all wars" more than a century ago.

His choirs, along with the OTHS concert band, earned 18 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Championships, creating the second most successful music department in IHSA history.
After surviving a heart attack in 2005, three years later Mr. Amm was diagnosed with cancer. While undergoing chemotherapy treatments, Amm led the OTHS music department to their 2012 IHSA State Music championship where they scored 1053 points in the process. It was an IHSA record at the time that was only topped in 2012 with a score of 1083... also by the OTHS music department in the year before Amm's retirement. It stands as an IHSA record that hasn't been matched.
On March 7th, 2013, about 200 Ottawa Township High School choral alumni joined about 200 current OTHS choir students under the leadership of OTHS band director Sarah Reckmeyer to perform the original composition by Joseph Martin, written for Roger Amm, titled "Something of Love" honoring the 33 year teaching career of Roger Amm, who retired at the end of the 2012 / 2013 school year.
That performance was the catalyst for this documentary about Roger Amm's career, created by one of his former students Kane Farabaugh. The documentary premiered at the OTHS auditorium in May 2013 and later aired on PBS stations throughout Illinois in 2013. It received a Chicago / Midwest Chapter National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Emmy Award for writing in 2014.Rare Footage of North Korea People's Army Military Training Recruit Video 1990s Pyongyang DPRKKaneStar2023-05-18 | Rare footage and interview with members of the Korean People's Army from the DPRK during military training in Pyongyang.U.S. Army Soldier Panmunjom North South Korea Joint Security Area Bridge of No Return Military DMZKaneStar2023-05-16 | A detailed tour giving an inside look of the Joint Security Area in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) of the Korean peninsula separating North and South Korea along the 38th parallel. Footage shows some flooded fields and rural villages accepting food aid.
From wikipedia: "The North Korean Famine (Korean: 조선기근), also known as the Arduous March or the March of Suffering[6] (고난의 행군), was a period of mass starvation together with a general economic crisis from 1994 to 1998 in North Korea.[7] During this time there was an increase in defection from North Korea which peaked towards the end of the famine period.
The famine stemmed from a variety of factors. Economic mismanagement and the loss of Soviet support caused food production and imports to decline rapidly. A series of floods and droughts exacerbated the crisis. The North Korean government and its centrally planned system proved too inflexible to effectively curtail the disaster. North Korea attempted to obtain aid and commercial opportunities, but failed to receive initial attention.[6][7][8]
Estimates of the death toll vary widely. Out of a total population of approximately 22 million, somewhere between 240,000 and 3,500,000 North Koreans died from starvation or hunger-related illnesses, with the deaths peaking in 1997.[9][10] A 2011 U.S. Census Bureau report estimated the number of excess deaths from 1993 to 2000 to be between 500,000 and 600,000.[11] "Rare Footage North Korea Military Army Chorus Song Tribute Leader Kim Il Sung Propaganda 1990s FilmKaneStar2023-05-16 | A video from a North Korean television broadcast of the Korean People's Army military chorus singing a song in tribute to the late North Korean leader Kim Il Sung.North Korea DPRK 50th Anniversary 1998 Pyongyang Military Parade Kim Jong Il FULL UNEDITEDKaneStar2023-05-15 | Day of the Foundation of the Republic DPRK military parade and display in the North Korean capitol Pyongyang, as broadcast on KCNA, September 1998.Antarctica Flyovers Arial U.S. Air Force C-130 takeoffs and landings South Pole McMurdo Station FULLKaneStar2023-05-15 | Raw footage inside and outside from the late 1990s and early 2000s showing takeoffs and landings of the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard C-130s (with skis) in Antarctica.Lucas Farabaugh Ottawa Township High School IL JV 2026 PERFECT GAME Pitching 4/29/23 v Rock FallsKaneStar2023-04-29 | Lucas Farabaugh 2026 RHP Uncommited

"ALTAIR (ARPA Long-Range Tracking And Instrumentation Radar) is a high-sensitivity, wide-bandwidth, coherent, instrumentation and tracking radar that is capable of collecting precise measurements on small targets at long-ranges. ALTAIR supports several operating modes, including tracking and signature collection at VHF and UHF. It is part of a network of contributing radar sensors that perform deep-space tracking.
The ALTAIR radar was originally built in 1969 as an instrumentation radar. The deepspace capability using different waveforms with intrapulse modulation was installed as part of the UHF system in 1982.[1] The radar is a dual-frequency radar operating at both VHF (155–162 MHz) and UHF (422 MHz). The antenna uses a steerable 150-ft dish (46-m-diameter) and employs a focal point VHF feed and multimode Cassegrain UHF feed in conjunction with a frequency selective sub-reflector (5.5 m diameter).[2]
ALTAIR uses in VHF-Band a monopulse feed[3] and transmits right-circular (RC) polarized energy and records left-circular (LC) sum, RC sum, LC azimuth angle difference, and LC elevation angle difference channels. These four measurements facilitate the determination of three-dimensional target position and velocity as a function of radar cross-section and run time. ALTAIR can independently track up to 32 targets in both VHF and UHF. Simultaneous track in both frequencies allows realtime ionospheric correction to further refine tracking accuracy.[2] ALTAIR has enough power aperture to track geosynchronous satellites, which are about 40,000 km slant range from the ground-based sensor."U.S. Army Reservists Engineers California Deployment Kwajalein Missile Range Marshall Islands AtollKaneStar2022-05-05 | A news report from the U.S. Army's Newswatch program in the 1990s about Reservists from California deploying to support the Space and Missile Defense Command's Kwajalein Missile Range in the Marshall Islands.U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command Kwajalein Atoll Range Minuteman 3 Test Marshall IslandsKaneStar2022-05-05 | A news report from the U.S. Military's Army Newswatch in the 1990s about upgrades at the Space and Missile Defense Command's Kwajalein Missile Range in the Kwajalein atoll of the Marshall Islands.Full AFN Europe Backstage TV Interview James Brown FM Eagle Radio Godfather of Soul Mr. DynamiteKaneStar2022-05-05 | A full, unedited television interview with the Godfather of Soul James Brown with the American Forces Network Europe in Germany during his tour there in the 1990s.
