Is atheism simply a lack of belief in God as some say or an active belief that there is no God? Is there a criteria for determining what a religion is or is not?

Rather than accept what the Bible says about who wrote Genesis (Moses), nearly all liberal Bible colleges and seminaries (and sadly some which profess conservative evangelical doctrine) teach the 'documentary hypothesis' (also known as the 'JEDP hypothesis') instead. So what is this hypothesis and does it actually answer the question of "Who wrote Genesis?"?

9 Problems in Atheist / Religious Relationships

Hemant Mehta (http://www.friendlyatheist.com, http://www.patreon.com/Hemant)

"In Faith and In Doubt: How Religious Believers and Nonbelievers Can Create Strong Marriages and Loving Families" by Dale McGowan
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0814433723/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0814433723&linkCode=as2&tag=wwwfriendlyat-20&linkId=EG4RHPHG646JKQ4H
ISBN-10: 0814433723
ISBN-13: 978-0814433720

Let's talk about 9 things that Dale says makes those relationships difficult. If you're having these problems, and you don't find a way to mitigate them, your relationship may be in trouble:

1) You had the same worldviews when you got married... and then one of you changed. You get married thinking you know the other person. you know what you're getting into. If religion means a lot to you and you marry someone from your church... and then that person loses his or her faith, that could be a huge problem in the relationship. My wife isn't religious, but if she told me she was now going to church every weekend, I'd be a little weirded out. I want to say it's fine, but you don't expect major changes like that *after* marriage.

2) Both partners intensely believe different things. If one of you is a hardcore atheist and the other doesn't really care, maybe believe in God, but pretty much shrugs it off... it's probably okay. But if you're married to, say, and evangelical Christian who thinks you're going to hell... good luck with that.

3) Both partners are very dogmatic in their thinking. That's not the same as intensity. This is all about how willing you are to hear your partner out. How willing you are to admit you might be wrong. If you're not the kind of person who'll budge on your beliefs, things may not end well. Again, one dogmatic person in the relationship? That might be okay. Two oppositely dogmatic people? Not so much.

4) One or both of you have a strong desire to convert the other one

You know how you probably won't ever change your partner's bad habits? Well, you probably won't change their concern for your eternal soul either. Or get them to stop thinking there's such a thing as an eternal soul if they believe that. If you're both constantly trying to change the other -- or "fix" the other -- you're just adding stress and tension to your relationship.

5) The non-religious partner is an anti-theist. If the non-religious one of you hold contempt for religion -- doesn't just think it's not true, but thinks people who are religious are brainwashed or that religion needs to be eradicated -- it's not going to work out well if you're with someone who's even mildly religious.

6) The religious partner is very conservative or attends a fundamentalist church.

Same thing in the other direction .

If you're a Jehovah's Witness or evangelical or Mormon or someone who kind of requires others to be just like you, the conflict will be strong. It's hard to have mutual respect when you think your partner is stupid or literally damned.

7) The marriage already has other high-risk factors

If you have different beliefs and other factors that often lead to divorce... it's not a good mix. Those factors include: a significant age difference, getting married very young, a history of divorce in the family... then the religious difference will probably exacerbate the problem.

8) You experience serious disapproval from extended family members or the community.

Maybe your partner can deal with your beliefs... but if you're afraid to deal with her parents because they look down on you for your beliefs, that's not going to be good in the future (especially if and when you have children).

9) There's disagreement over religious identity and practices for the children.

Will the kids choose a religious identity for themselves? Will they attend church? Will they be baptized or confirmed or bar mitzvahed? Are you not willing to discuss those issues? If you don't have answers to those questions, ideally before the kids are born, you're in for some drawn out fights in the future.

...

So those are some of the biggest problems with religious/secular relationships. But don't forget to check out our other video about how to make those relationships work.

Again, all of these come from Dale McGowan's forthcoming book In Doubt and in Faith. It's great. Be sure to pre-order your copy below.

And if you have any other warning signs that might leads to mixed-belief relationships not working, leave them below!

This caller asks the classic question every Theist asks at some point. Basically he thinks Atheism is just another religion. This common misconception is based on the fact most Theists don't understand the definition of Atheist. It's also a result of misinformation taught to Theists by their respective churches. Matt does an excellent job of pointing out that Dogma is all on Religion. Atheism has no tenants, dogma, belief structures or ceremonies. Being an Atheist isn't really an -ism at all. For the last time to you Theists out there, being an Atheist really tells you just one thing about a person. They don't accept any God claims. They don't hold any beliefs that God or Gods exist. From there Atheists believe many things, and will vary from person to person depending on the individual. Enjoy.

• Embryo similarity
• The Miller/Urey experiment
• Peppered Moths
• Homology
• Horse evolution
• Fossil record
• Dinosaurs
• Archaeopteryx
• Whale evolution
• Tiktaalik

If God exists, then why does fiction prevail?

Pascal's Wager is still a common argument amongst the majority of theists (who are inexperienced in this discussion). I see it all the time. If you see it, do me a favor and send them this video, which covers one of the possible rebuttals.

CyberneticPony sent me a suggestion to tackle Pascal's Wager, saying that I should depict a believer arriving in an unexpected heaven. This video is what I came up with, with some additional points of my own. I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for the suggestion, CyberneticPony. If any of you think an idea of yours would lend itself well to my style, please let me know. Also, thank you Devcehlle2 for suggesting that it would be funny if Muhammad's flying horse was being eaten. Jeffhamad thoroughly enjoyed it.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: Atheist or Agnostic?Neil deGrasse Tyson: Atheist or Agnostic?
Neil deGrasse Tyson: Atheist or Agnostic?

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson claims the title "scientist" above all other "ists." And yet, he says he is "constantly claimed by atheists." So where does he stand? "Neil deGrasse, widely claimed by atheists, is actually an agnostic."

Neil deGrasse Tyson: I'm often asked -- and occasionally in an accusatory way -- "Are you atheist?"  And it's like, you know, the only "ist" I am is a scientist, all right?  I don't associate with movements.  I'm not an "ism."  I just  - I think for myself.  The moment when someone attaches to a philosophy or a movement, then they assign all the baggage and all the rest of the philosophy that goes with it to you, and when you want to have a conversation they will assert that they already know everything important there is to know about you because of that association.  And that's not the way to have a conversation.  I'm sorry.  It's not.  I'd rather we explore each other's ideas in real time rather than assign a label to it and assert, you know, what's going to happen in advance.
So what people are really after is, what is my stance on religion or spirituality or God?  And I would say, if I find a word that came closest it would be agnostic.  Agnostic -- the word dates from the 19th century -- Huxley -- to refer to someone who doesn't know but hasn't yet really seen evidence for it but is prepared to embrace the evidence if it's there but if it's not won't be forced to have to think something that is not otherwise supported.
There are many atheists who say, "Well, all agnostics are atheists."  Okay.  I'm constantly claimed by atheists.  I find this intriguing.  In fact, on my Wiki page -- I didn't create the Wiki page, others did, and I'm flattered that people cared enough about my life to assemble it -- and it said, "Neil deGrasse is an atheist."  I said, "Well that's not really true."  I said, "Neil deGrasse is an agnostic."  I went back a week later.  It said, "Neil deGrasse is an atheist." -- again within a week -- and I said, "What's up with that?" and I said, "I have to word it a little differently."  So I said, okay, "Neil deGrasse, widely claimed by atheists, is actually an agnostic."
And some will say, well, that's -- "You're not being fair to the fact that they're actually the same thing."  No, they're not the same thing, and I'll tell you why.  Atheists I know who proudly wear the badge are active atheists.  They're like in your face atheist and they want to change policies and they're having debates.  I don't have the time, the interest, the energy to do any of that.  I'm a scientist.  I'm an educator.  My goal is to get people thinking straight in the first place, just get you to be curious about the natural world.  That's what I'm about.  I'm not about any of the rest of this.
And it's odd that the word atheist even exists.  I don't play golf.  Is there a word for non-golf players?  Do non-golf players gather and strategize?  Do non-skiers have a word and come together and talk about the fact that they don't ski?  I don't—I can't do that.  I can't gather around and talk about how much everybody in the room doesn't believe in God.  I just don't—I don't have the energy for that, and so I . . . Agnostic separates me from the conduct of atheists whether or not there is strong overlap between the two categories, and at the end of the day I'd rather not be any category at all.

Based on the conclusion to Stephen Wolfram's book, A New Kind of Science, this little film explores how simple computational programs can lead to unimagined complexity. Utilizing his work on cellular automata, Wolfram explains why science can never actually explain everything fully, since some aspects in the universe are computationally irreducible and must be played out over time.

Be still, for the presence of the Lord, The Holy One, is here.
Come bow before him now, with reverence and fear.
In him no sin is found, we stand on holy ground.
Be still for the presence of the Lord, The Holy One, is here.

Be still for the glory of the Lord is shining all around.
He burns with holy fire, with splendour he is crowned.
How awesome is the sight, our radiant King of light!
Be still for the glory of the Lord is shining all around

Be still for the power of the Lord is moving in this place.
He comes to cleanse and heal, to minister his grace.
No work too hard for him, in faith, receive from him.
Be still for the power of the Lord is moving in this place.

www.thegodvirus.net Is atheism a religion? Atheists are people who prefer not to have imaginary friends. Religionists have imaginary friends. That is the primary difference. Religions of all kinds have imaginary friends. That is why atheism is not a religion, we do not have or want imaginary friends. Most of us espouse some kind of Secular Humanism and believe an ethical life if possible, even preferable, to one with an imaginary friend.

Is Atheism a religion? 7 criteria for detecting a religion
Is atheism simply a lack of belief in God as some say or an active belief that there is no God? Is there a criteria for determining what a religion is or is not?
