Additional Discussion:
I did not get a chance to review the cameras or camera software because one of the cameras was damaged. The version of iOS that was on the device at the time when I took possession of it was not as strict as newer versions, (which will close the camera app upon recognition of a fault in any of its modules, instead of allowing the user to soldier on with the remaining good hardware) but I did not remain on it long enough to perform meaningful testing. From the raw samples that I've seen, the results are quite good, and I do believe that Apple's camera software is quite excellent overall, (in terms of not overprocessing the jpegs) so I have little reason to believe that the X is lacking in this department, contrary to what we saw on newer Samsungs.
Addendum: I'll add that, one thing I forgot to mention in the head-to-head of the Samsung Omnia versus HTC Diamond is that the Omnia, in addition to having an SD card slot, also had 8GB of storage, which, unlike the Diamond's 4, was actually somewhat adequate at the time.

Additional commentary:
1. 4 monitor output - To expand on this, one of those four must be the laptop's own built-in monitor, but given how good that screen is, this is hardly a problem. I did use an active DisplayPort-to-HDMI/DVI adapter on one of those, so, not sure if this made a difference or not. I was just really impressed to see that this computer will break the 3-monitor barrier this effortlessly when so many others of the era utterly failed in this regard. This is the best evidence I have (aside from the remarkable combination of light/thin computer with great specs and a huge battery) that Apple was capable of great things if/when they applied themselves. If they'd put this kind of attention-to-detail in to the rest of the PC, it would've been an absolute champion of a computer.
2. MagSafe 2 connector - I kind of glossed over it in the video, but this thing is utter trash. Even after using a toothbrush to clean the filth out of the connector and its mating surface, this thing ages very poorly. It does work, but only in one direction, and takes some finagling to get good contact. Even when it does, that plug really heats up good and warm.
3. OSX - As a desktop replacement, Windows does the job pretty well, (weird 20-second graphics reset/stall on startup notwithstanding) but given the lack of switchable graphics and brightness control, the user's hand is forced to OSX for portable use. As I mentioned in the narrative, even though SmoothMouse does nothing to improve scrolling, the stock trackpad driver actually compensates pretty well. From a usability standpoint, it's actually pretty usable under OSX, but given that web browsers (and other web-adjacent programs) aren't receiving updates anymore, it's only a matter of time before functionality is eroded by changing standards and fixed paths.

Editorial Notes
Certain sections had to be cut from the video due to time. Here are two that I felt still deserve some kind of mention:
1. Microphone - The microphone system is pretty decent. Not quite as good as the reigning champion, (that being the Moto X Pure Edition, of course) but still good. Stereo video recording is a thing. While there is no true front-facing microphone like what we saw on the LG V20, there is a dedicated directional microphone on the back close to the camera array to assist during the recording of telephoto videos.
2. Fingerprint scanner - Samsung was reportedly planning to include the "cutting-edge" optical in-display fingerprint scanner on the Note 9 already, but had to ditch it at the last second. This is, without doubt, the worst cell phone fingerprint scanner I've ever used. It is slow and fussy. It's not even as secure as a capacitive scanner, to add insult to injury (did I mention that the facial scanner was axed from this model as well?). To be clear, it does work "well enough," most of the time. Just be prepared to re-train it every few months. TL;DR? It's acceptable, but nowhere near as good as a proper capacitive fingerprint scanner once the novelty factor wears off. Use of "smart lock" can help defer the impact of this shortcoming.

Commands from Part 2:
1. runmefirst.bat. Leave this window open.
2. step1.bat. Leave this window open also.
3. (on the device itself) id
4. (on the device itself) applypatch /system/bin/atd /storage/emulated/0/dirtysanta
5. step2.bat
(all scripts should terminate after step2.bat is finished)
Commands from Part 3:
1. step3.bat
2. adb reboot bootloader
3. fastboot flash boot bootbackup.img
4. fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-1-us996.img
5. fastboot flash boot bootbackup.img
(6 and 7 must be done at the same time)
6. fastboot reboot
7. (on the device) Hold volume down and power button until LG emblem appears. Once it does, do not let go of volume-down, but let go of power for about a half a second, and then go back to holding it until the white screen comes up asking for a hard reset. Let go of all buttons when this happens.
Recommended Screen Calibration Profile:
Red - 256
Green - 241
Blue - 226
Minimum - 0
Saturation - 12
Value - 128
Contrast - 128
Hue - 0
Corrections:
1. On official bootloader unlocks. LG's website for official bootloader unlocks is slated to become unavailable after the end of 2021. Once that happens, this will become the only method for unlocking the bootloader on the US996 model.
2. In part 5, I mentioned that the MK2000 kernel causes issues for encryption. It is my understanding now that it is actually the rom, and not the kernel, that causes this. Either way, it still doesn't work.
In 2008, I finally got around to filming a short review of the device, but it was never published... until now. Instead of just playing the raw video without context, I thought that this would represent an excellent opportunity to engage in a retrospective discussion about the market, which, while radically different today, carries a number of interesting parallels.
List of portable devices shown in the video: (in order of ownership)
IBM WorkPad C500 (rebranded Palm m500)
Nikon Coolpix S1 Camera
Onda VX878 portable media player
HP iPAQ 4150
HTC Diamond
Samsung Epic
Samsung Galaxy Note 2
Motorola Moto X Pure Edition (XT1575)
Interesting postscript: I had to completely re-render this entire video because apparently it is no longer acceptable to have even 20 seconds of "Gold on the Ceiling" playing. Sigh.

Clarifications and Corrections:
9:42 - I should mention that this phone has two microphones, but there is no way (as far as I have been able to find so far) to record audio or video in stereo.
11:15 - Said "former," meant "latter." I usually try to do a pretty good job of proofreading the scripted videos, but sometimes mistakes like these do slip through.
15:05 - By "crusty sounding," I'm mainly referring to the speaker's clarity at lower volume levels, which reeks of interference (think early-2000s Windows XP computer speaker interference racket). It's hardly noticeable at levels higher than ~40%.

Following the demise of Deezloader, (shown in my last video on the topic, back in 2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyDN_u2VcIw) there has been uncertainty as to which front-end would rise to the occasion to allow the acquisition of music from long-time Grooveshark competitor, Deezer.

Post action report on the ventilated seats:
While the perforation doesn't extend as far up on the seatback as I had hoped, what is ventilated does stay fresh. I give these ventilated seats a passing grade as-is, but would recommend that you exercise your own judgment on a more humid day (this was originally filmed in March).

The week prior to the recording of this video, the Park Avenue started just fine on a -10° morning with the lights on, which is the reasoning behind my cheeky "this should be no problem" remark early in the video. That cold start, while chilly, was nowhere near as difficult as this one, in part because the temperature had not been that cold for so long.
The power steering, which has always been a bit on the whiny side when it's warm outside, sounds outright depressing when it gets down to the -10° mark. A lot of things start to behave curiously at that temperature.
In the day that passed between the unassisted cold start seen at the beginning of the video and the jump-start shown in the second half, the Park was jump-started once off of another vehicle in the afternoon, a struggle made all too real by the hood being frozen shut. Ironically, this was not the first time that a car's hood has been frozen shut on me, but that's a story for another video.
Stay frosty! ...but also, stay safe.

Addendum:
As I've reviewed this video and the way I narrated it, I realize that I came across a bit more pessimistic than originally intended. Understand that while my concerns are legitimate, I still very much like this phone and do intend to get another 1-2 years out of it at minimum. Just because it isn't "mobile device of the year" doesn't mean that it's not an excellent device. This is still an excellent device.
Regarding serviceability - even though parts aren't readily available and there is some adhesive to remove, this phone definitely is not too bad to service. It's not iPhone-easy, but it's still pretty straightforward compared to some mobiles. There are a lot of (small Torx) screws, but they're all the same size and the process is generally a smooth one.
One thing I failed to mention in the video is that the replacement back covers (which you shouldn't need; 1-2 breaches of the rubber won't ruin it, but my excessive and repeated attempts at battery replacement did) are slightly different from the originals. The material looks identical, but attracts way more dust and just doesn't have the same level of grip. It's a minor gripe, but one that makes me wish I didn't have to go back into the phone so many times (thereby ruining the original). TL;DR? If you're careful, you can re-use the original back cover, even if you have to replace the adhesive.

Additional notes: I neglected to mention the availability of a headphone jack during the connectivity tour. There's also a rear-facing webcam (for some strange reason). TDP on the chipset is unknown, but believed to be very low.
Also, it is impossible to overstate how good that screen is. The brightness is very high, but the contrast is outstanding. The exceptional calibration and all-around performance is almost unheard of in this price class. Easily one of the best small LCD panels I've ever seen.
The front-facing speakers are unimpressive, but the fact that they face forward earns them usability points. I've definitely heard worse.
Charging over MicroUSB can be a bit of a drag, but not being burdened down by an extra/large AC adapter is also liberating. That, along with the bonus USB port that you get (by way of a breakout cable, as mentioned at 8:40 in the video, easily makes up for this shortcoming.

Footnote:
I should also add that the quality of the tubes (or possibly the supporting power supplies and circuitry) in these HD projection sets seems to be vastly superior to those found in standard definition direct-view tube models (even newer ones) in that they exhibit little-to-no discernible "bloom" effect (that annoying phenomenon where the picture gets bigger as more light is added to the image). Instead, they offer a very stable image, more in line with what you might see from a standard CRT monitor.

Additional annotations:
I should mention that this computer also has an ambient light sensor which allows for enhanced control of the keyboard backlighting (the keys won't light up in an adequately-lit room if you desire) as well as the display's backlighting. This feature only requires that the Dell Feature Enhancement or Dell System Software be installed on Windows. I have not tested its functionality on any Linux distributions.

Also, be aware that I no longer own this set. I will attempt to answer any questions that you may have about it in the comments section, but my memory of certain components or issues may be limited.
Please pardon the slightly diminished production value. This video was actually shot last year (in April of 2016) and I'm still playing catch-up with the backlog, so the newer, better videos will be slowly taking the lead as I finish getting through all of these. The content is still definitely quite interesting in my opinion.
No chapters in this one; just paragraphs.

Corrections/Clarifications and Supplementary Commentary:
5:22 - Screen brightness for the Galaxy Note 2, measured by the same outfit that benchmarked the Moto X Pure Edition at 715 nits, (Phone Arena) was measured at 292 nits, meaning that, at peak brightness, the Pure Edition can put out over twice as much light. It's quite impressive when compared to the Pure Edition's close cousin, the Nexus 6, which maxes out at only 270 nits, and its grandfather, the original Moto X, which provides an even greater disappointment with 218 nits. In fact, the Pure Edition's 715 nits beats out the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S8, HTC Pixel, Pixel XL, U11, LG G6, and LG V20. It's impossible to overstate how absolutely epic this screen is.
6:26 - Fun fact: I don't consider rear-facing speakers to be a dealbreaker as long as they are loud enough. Whatever size of driver they can stuff into the casing of a superthin smartphone isn't going to be that impressive no matter how you look at it, but having two speakers helps sidestep this limitation by not only increasing the soundfield from mono to stereo, but also doubling the theoretical sound output.
7:43 - It's impossible to overstate how narrow this phone is relative to its screen size. People think that Samsung and LG "own" the thin bezels genre, but Motorola did quite the job here that I would consider to be nothing short of miraculous. You sure won't see anything like this on newer Lenovo-based Motorola products that have made a name for themselves by becoming the "big bezels brand."
9:44 - Even though I do own two protective TPU sleeve "cases" for this device, I will admit that I do occasionally use it without either one ("naked"). I may have been a bit strict about it in the review, but just to be clear, this phone is far better without a TPU than many other models. That doesn't change the fact that the edges are still a bit slick however, so I still do recommend some kind of casing for most usage scenarios. The issue is further discussed in a thread over on XDA DEVELOPERS:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/accessories/pure-edition-naked-phone-challenge-2017-t3600169
And yes, I am aware that I misspelled "censorship". Unfortunately, I only came to that conclusion after recording the video.

Spring/Summer 2017 Footnote:
Since this review was published, SlingPlayer for Windows is no longer functioning properly with the SlingBox. The company has refused to issue any explanation for this bothersome issue and the "official" solution is to simply use the web plugin. The happy ending to all of this is that the web plugin is now more responsive and less buggy, so the product still remains somewhat useful, but I have the sneaking suspicion that it is only a matter of time before this goes down as well, at which point we will be at the mercy of a third party who can (hopefully) build some kind of unofficial program to work around the issue.
The Android client currently still functions properly.

For what it's worth, the OEM Microsoft branded VGA cable for the Xbox 360 is fantastic. Not only is it long enough for any setup, it also includes analog audio output leads and still has an optical audio output (same as on the equally-excellent component cable that the system used to come with). As I explain in the video, this is one of the reasons why the humble Xbox 360 is one of the best game consoles ever, at least from a technical and compatibility standpoint. While the PlayStation 3 has some limited support for VGA, only the Xbox 360 has the flexibility to support over a dozen different resolutions in at least four different aspect ratios (4:3, 16:9, 16:10, and 5:4). This feature alone means it'll work with just about any SD or HD television or monitor that you can plug it into, even the more obscure stuff.

Because of the fact that one of the facets of "modern web design" now includes the senseless moving around of documents on the web, it is possible that some of these links may go bad. If this becomes the case, please leave a comment indicating so or send me a personal message, and I'll try to get it straightened out as quickly as possible. In the meantime, you may be able to use archive.org or a cleverly-crafted web search to find an updated version of the resource.
