The idea of this project was created by Tania Saleh. It aims at honoring the legacy of our Arab poets, writers and thinkers and at the same time empowers our youth to express themselves in drawing, painting and Arabic calligraphy to create beautiful street art paintings on the walls of the Arab world.
This pilot episode covers the making of the homage wall to artist and thinker Ziad Rahbany by Lebanese street artist Ashekman.
Street art: Omar Kabbani - Ashekman
Filmed and edited by Elie Fahed

Lyrics translation:
I am invited to the rooster’s wedding
And I don’t have a dress
All my friends are going
To the neighbor’s barn
It is after tomorrow
They are all excited
The duck, the doe, the cow
The hen and her little ones
I am invited to the rooster’s wedding
I am invited to the rooster’s wedding
I am invited to the rooster’s wedding
And I don’t have a dress
The rooster with his open wings
Thinks he is a peacock
Walking between his chicks
To choose the lucky bride
The neighborhood is sleepless
The moon is still awake
And I am looking all over town
For needles and threads
I am invited to the rooster’s wedding
I am invited to the rooster’s wedding
I am invited to the rooster’s wedding
And I don’t have a dress
They knew I was a small mouse
They opened the way
They referred me to a silkworm
In the old alleyway
The worm was so warm
She had a big heart
She spun to my size
A beautiful silk dress
I am invited to the rooster’s wedding
I am invited to the rooster’s wedding
I am invited to the rooster’s wedding
I now have a dress

This is a song cover I did during the confinement in homage to one of my favorite Egyptian singers/actresses, the late Shadia. My voice was recorded on my laptop in Beirut, the guitar, drums and percussion were recorded in Cairo by Shady Mounier.

Arrangement by Shady Mounier - Mixed and mastered by Michael Beskales

About this song:
I have been playing around with a music-making program named Garage Band for a while and wrote a few song demos that I thought I would record properly after the confinement, which took longer than I expected, so I figured I might just have to release a song and see the effect it could make on people. I also discovered a program online for 2D animation named Pencil 2D, so I dug into a few tutorials and went on animating my illustrations. I have always dreamed to have time to do this kind of animation work. With my daily job, my music and my kids, I never could find that time. Now there is plenty of time on my hands. I try to use this long confinement wisely rather than just stay on my phone. In light of what’s happening in Lebanon now, we all have a constant urge to just run away, but all we can do is continue living in our respective bubbles, with our chosen people…

I Wish
I dream of building a treehouse
Unexpected like a sudden idea
With no future and no past
Open to a hundred possibilities
I wish...
I will build it on another planet
With no sand and no gold
Enough for all the beautiful people
That I love for no reason
I wish...
Each man/woman has a story
In its beginning or its middle
Some play their roles
Others forget their lines
I wish...

Fi Balad Al Akhareen (In Other People’s Land )
Who am I, where am I from?
Don’t I have a nationality?
My ancestors are red flags
And golden liberation wars
Why do those stiff people
Find me strange?
My country’s wind is behind me
Forgotten like me
Even my land is in exile
Just like its people
I am an Arab but
The Arab world denies it
My land is an exile
Of endless mazes
I am a stranger, where am I from?
Traveling without an identity
I am without a homeland
But fooled by patriotism

Al Sharq (The Orient )
Oh Orient, you look so bright
But your darkness prevails
You are full of warmth
But your body is lazy cold
Nine hundred million people
Or are they sheep
The sun makes our people look like eggplants
Oh Orient, you look so bright
But your darkness prevails
Daughter of the pyramid builder
Gather your garments
And the burka with a hole in it
Along with all your scarves
Stop roaming aimlessly in the harem
Free yourself of your anklets
I have never seen a prisoner
So silent and so passive
The ignorance of women
Has made us become antique
Dressed with torn cloth
And some stitches
Anyway, the country is known
For no factories
Except the factories of flour
Long live Badrawi!

Ayya Shi (Anything Can Happen)
Anything can happen, anytime
Stay alert, stay awake
The situation is very very messy
Keep expecting the worst
From your North or from your South
And keep your head down
Or else it will be chopped off
Anything can happen, anytime
Stay alert, stay awake
The situation is very very dirty

Alamieh (Global )
Global, human suffering is global
Everyone looks and turns away
Blaming, accusing, abusing
I wonder who’s the next prey
Global, a hundred per cent global
Discourse after discourse
Waging the water wars
And I’m a thirsty wailing 'ney'
But how can I complain
When I don’t know who’s to blame
I believe in solar power
The sun is on my side
I’m drowning in my debts
And your silence is golden
When global powers take a nap
Arab conscience stays awake
Wasting its precious time
Dancing the night away
You’re the unfaithful believer
Your flower blooms with artificial light
Global...
But how can I complain
When I don’t know who’s to blame

Hashishet Albi (The Hash of My Heart)
Break the patty, dice it, cut it and grind it
Make it soft, make it smooth, mix the fix, c’mon
Made of the best harvest
A chunk is worth a diamond
Blonde or brown
It makes no difference, c’mon
Hash it and don’t be stingy
He’s the hash of my heart
He’s drowning and needs a buoy
Flatten it and knead it
Roll it and then twist it
Turn it and flip it and bake it on fire
Made of the best harvest
A chunk is worth a diamond
Blonde or brown
It makes no difference, c’mon
Hash it and don’t be stingy
He’s the hash of my heart
He’s screaming and needs a soother
Leave him alone for now
Just ignore him
He’ll have an open mind
And put his problems behind
Maybe we’ll see him smile
He’ll be happy for a while
Made of the best harvest
A chunk is worth a diamond
Blonde or red
It makes no difference, c’mon
Hash it and don’t be stingy
He’s the hash of my heart
He’s sleepy and needs his 'dishdasha'

Hal Ouyoun (Those Eyes)
At times they’re light, like magic like love
And at times they’re dark, like swords like caves
Oh how I love those eyes, no matter how they look
Oh how I love those eyes, those eyes, those eyes
At times they’re quarrelsome, susceptible and defensive
And at times they’re peaceful, transparent and receptive
Oh how I love those eyes, no matter how they look
Oh how I love those eyes, those eyes, those eyes
Sometimes they look left and sometimes they look right
They are full of defects and sins, those eyes
At times they’re golden, full of corals and pearls
And at times they’re volcanic, with mines and flames
Oh how I love those eyes, no matter how they look
Oh how I love those eyes, those eyes, those eyes
If a look of affection falls accidentally on my eyes
My love becomes blind, I go gladly out of my mind
Oh how I love those eyes, no matter how they look
Oh how I love those eyes, those eyes, those eyes

Lyrics:
Standing by the wall all alone
Wondering what to do
Waiting for a call or a sign
Of something new
Waiting for my turn in this
Long and tiring queue
I can’t find a reason
Why I should be there for you
Slow down
I can’t keep up with your intentions
Slow down
I can’t keep up with your inventions
Standing by the wall all alone
Feeling cold and strange
Looking for a new diversion
To make me spend my modest wage
Wasting my days away
I can’t put out this burning rage
If that’s what modern life is all about
I prefer the Stone Age
Slow down
I can’t keep up with your intentions
Slow down
I can’t keep up with your pretension
Slow down
I can’t keep up with your intentions
Slow down
I can’t keep up with your connections

English translation by Wessam Elmeligi:
We are in a fix, Sweetie, we are in a fix
We went to get some fresh air
Turns out fresh air is expensive
Bring me the necessities
And hand me some water
And forget love making
Sweetie
Tonight, dinner is light
There are olives and a loaf of bread
And we still have four turnips left, Sweetie
If you want felafel, bring some
And if you want something green, bring some
But pls come straight home
And no flirting with cotton candy!
We are in a fix, Sweetie, we are in a fix
We went to get some fresh air
Turns out fresh air is expensive
We are in a fix, Sweetie, we are in a fix
You hid all your pennies
For a rainy day
It is pouring now, Sweetie
And I am drowning
We are in a fix, Sweetie, we are in a fix
We went to get some fresh air
Turns out fresh air is expensive
We are in a fix, Sweetie, we are in a fix

Lyrics: http://www.taniasaleh.com/booklets
http://www.taniasaleh.com
The original track "Show Me the Way-كيف بروح" was written by Tania Saleh and included in her last album "Intersection" released by the Norwegian label KKV in December 2017. Since then, the situation in the Arab world has gone even more complicated.
Two years later, the Arabs are still asking themselves if there is any way this misery is going to end, or if there is any way out of it, hence the title of the track.
"Show Me the Way-كيف بروح" was originally produced by Khalil Judran and remixed by Nino, a young Lebanese musician whose work was discovered recently at one of the riots on the streets of Lebanon.
This is going to be the start of a series of collaborations to encourage emerging young talents from the region. Hoping the music scene will stay inspired.
